FROM PETER'S PEN
I love jazz and recently I've started listening to "Free For All," a 1964 album by Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers. When I listen to the album (and especially the title track), I'm really delighted by the solo work that Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), and Curtis Fuller (trombone) do. There is an intense and beautiful exuberance in their playing that causes me to perk up and feel good, even at the end of the day.
I experience a similar feeling when we worship together. Worship in the Episcopal Church is designed to be the work of all of us together, generously leavened with God's Spirit. When we gather for worship, each of us is necessary, each of us is important. And when the Holy Spirit is among us, it can cause a palpable and unforgettable feeling - a holy joy!
When you worship at Ascension, I hope that you're able to feel some of this as well. I also hope you realize that you are essential to what happens. Though the preacher and the people gathered around the altar are very visible, the people praying in the pews, reciting the creed, reading the Scripture, and providing us with the beautiful music are equally important.
Thank you for being a part of the 'holy jazz' here at Ascension. It is a joy to worship with you.

TO DEDICATE A PRAYER BOOK
OR HYMNAL
- Prayer Book cost is $18 - Hymnal cost is $24 (standard pew editions).
- Make your check payable to 'Church of the Ascension' and WRITE A MEMO ON THE CHECK for either 'Prayer Book' or 'Hymnal.'
- You may put your check with the Sunday offering OR take it to the parish office.
- You will be notified when your book is received, so you may make arrangements for the book's dedication inscription and initial placement (you may do this yourself, or ask the office to handle it).
Please understand that there is no guarantee that any book will always stay in the same pew or place in the church; prayer books do get moved around for various reasons. But be assured that your gift will be used and appreciated by the Ascension congregation for many years to come.

S A F E T Y R A I L I N G
The Vestry recently accepted a bid of about $3,700 and work has begun on replacing the handicap access railing at the north/left front entrance to the church. Repair was postponed much longer than it should have been, and recently the railing completely failed and came apart in several places. It is now an urgent and immediate safety hazard, and the railing is needed by several parishioners. This is a significant unplanned expense coming at a tight-budget time of year for the parish.
Please help as you are able: make your check payable to Church of the Ascension and put “safety rail” in the memo line. Thank you!
