A Note from our Head of Social Development...
Dear Crossroads Parents,

I cannot believe it is already the second week of school! Last week flew by getting to meet the students, parents, and beginning to get used to the routines of school. I wanted to take this time to introduce myself. My name is Ayesha Baig and I am the Head of Social Development and part of the Leadership Team at Crossroads School, Inc. This year, I will be teaching the Social Skills class, middle school Math, and Social Activities along with three other teachers.

I am a certified K-12 school counselor in the state of Texas and I am certified to teach Mathematics. I was an Algebra 1 teacher at Elsik Ninth Grade Center in Alief ISD for six years with five years of co-teaching special education students.

Before moving to Texas six years ago, I lived in the great, but small, state of Wyoming where I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and a Master’s Degree in Counselor Education with an emphasis in School Counseling. In my spare time, I like to spend time with my husband, my family, and friends. I love reading and sports. I tend to watch sports more than I play them. The past couple of weeks at Crossroads School have been wonderful because I am enjoying having conversations with the students about Houston sports (I grew up north of Denver, Colorado, so I am a Colorado fan in sports but I do support the Rockets, Texans, and Astros), as well as their passion for reading. I am gathering a list of new reading material.

Something new that we are starting this year at Crossroads School is called the “Strategies Tracker” (Formerly called “Point Sheets”). It is essential to be consistent with behavior expectations and consequences. Each student will start out with two goals for the school year. Underneath each goal will be a list of strategies to help the students accomplish that goal. For example, if a student’s goal is paying attention to the teacher, the strategies under that goal would be: Eye contact (facing teacher), taking notes, listening, and being quiet while instruction is taking place.

  • If a teacher sees the student performing a strategy under a particular goal, the teacher should circle that strategy. A circle means that the student has met expectation for that goal. If strategies were used, the student will get a check for that goal.
  • If a student is not performing a strategy under a particular goal, the teacher can write a note beside it indicating the student has met the expectation for that goal.
  • Goals will change every couple of weeks.

Enjoy this newsletter, send it on to friends and do not hesitate to contact us if you ever have questions or
comments to share. We look forward to learning and growing with you in the coming academic year.

Thank you to Crossroads Alumni
This past weekend, Crossroads Alumni Blake Deery led a team of volunteers in fulfillment of his Eagle Scout project. The team, which included several other alumni students, worked in the heat to remove the old planter boxes located by the swings in anticipation of new and expanded swing sets that will be installed soon.

Blake and his team built a completely new planter in the picnic table courtyard that will become a student garden this year.
