SafeTALK November

**IMPORTANT NOTES: If you work for an organization that is a contracted PROVIDER of Mercy Care, please do not register on this system. Sign up through your Relias portal instead, which has its own wait list option as well. If you are a Mercy Care EMPLOYEE, please register through the Aetna Learning Center. This page is for Maricopa County schools/school districts, youth-serving organizations that are NOT contracted with Mercy Care, and community members and stakeholders that serve and work with youth up to age 18. If you do not fall within those categories, you can find other open trainings here: https://mercycaresafetalk.eventbrite.com**

safeTALK is a half-day alertness workshop that prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognize these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources, such as caregivers trained in ASIST.

Who should attend a safeTALK workshop?

Although formal caregivers such as social workers and counselors employ safeTALK skills, the program is also used by students, teachers, community volunteers, first responders, military personnel, police, public and private employees, and professional athletes—among many others. By providing a universal model with adaptable components, safeTALK offers useful skills to every audience.

What can I expect?

safeTALK is a powerful experience. You can expect to feel challenged, empowered, and hopeful. Your safeTALK trainer will demonstrate the importance of suicide alertness and help you identify ways people invite help when they’re at risk. safeTALK’s steps provide a simple yet effective method to engage with people at risk and connect them with resources that can carry out a full-scale intervention. At the end of the workshop, you’ll have a chance to practice these skills firsthand. All in all, you can expect to leave safeTALK with practical knowledge of how to identify someone at risk and link them to life-saving resources.

Objectives

After training, participants in the safeTALK program should be able to:

  1. Challenge attitudes that inhibit open talk about suicide.
  2. Recognize a person who might be having thoughts of suicide.
  3. Engage them in direct and open talk about suicide.
  4. Listen to the person’s feelings about suicide to show that they are taken seriously.
  5. Move quickly to connect them with someone trained in suicide intervention

Safety considerations:  Persons who have experienced recent suicide behavior or loss may find it helpful to wait until healing has occurred before taking this course.  Sometimes, personal experience gets in the way of learning to help others.  We aim to create a safe learning environment for all.  Help is available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week by calling 602-222-9444.

Credit Hours:  3.25
