President's Letter

At the start of each year, the NAMLE Board of Directors commits to meeting in person. This year, we spent an incredible, wintry weekend in Chicago working on our strategic plan.  As part of the plan, we reviewed our mission, vision and the unique value NAMLE would like to offer. Since we have grown exponentially this past year, I wanted to share with you some of the key statements to which we hold ourselves accountable in order to serve our community.

NAMLE's mission is to be the leading voice, convener and resource to foster critical thinking and effective communication for empowered media participation. We have a vision that media literacy be highly valued by all and widely practiced as an essential life skill for the 21st Century. As a nonprofit organization, we strive to be a voice for our organizational partners and broader community. We offer annual convenings to share knowledge and resources and further the field of media literacy.

But most importantly, I must say "WOW... hats off to each of you!"  Michelle shared with us a State of NAMLE presentation. Since we changed our membership structure in 2016, we have grown our community 1000%.  I think we can all attest that the need for Media Literacy is more pressing than ever.  It is an extremely hot topic that is being discussed in the news, with strangers on the train, all the way to the living rooms of each of our homes.

People understand the importance of media literacy.  They are ready to listen and eager to acquire the habits of inquiry and skills of expression that we need to be critical thinkers, effective communicators and active citizens in today's world.  So, please share how to become a member of NAMLE with your fellow teacher, your neighbor or that stranger on the bus who turns to you to begin a conversation on issues that are pressing on everyone's minds.

Erin B. Reilly
President, NAMLE

M-Passion ed: Meet our Members

Chris Rettstatt
Children's Media Professional

"I've always had a strong drive to empower kids to be more in control of their worlds, and a huge part of this is being mindful consumers and creators of media. As a media creator, I know the responsibility and challenges involved in media creation and the impact those choices have on kids. The line between the creation and consumption of media continues to blur, creating new opportunities as well as new risks."  [ read more ]
