Here is the BCHF's Fall's newsletter!

Welcome to the autumn 2019 edition of the BCHF newsletter. Our organization had a great – and very busy! – summer, with lots of successful fundraising events. We were fortunate that the weather cooperated with our plans, and that we got such tremendous support from the community.  THANK YOU to everyone who supported us over the summer, including event sponsors, donors, and volunteers, as well as the BCHF Board and Industry Advisory Council. We love what we’re doing, but we couldn’t do it without your help!
Harry McWatters – In Memoriam

One of the BCHF’s founders , Harry McWatters, passed away on July 23, 2019.

Harry was a legend in the BC wine industry, with an unshakeable belief that our province had the potential to produce world-class wines. His long list of professional accomplishments included founding the British Columbia Wine Institute (BCWI), the Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) Canada, and BC’s first estate winery, Sumac Ridge.
We are grateful for Harry’s guidance and hard work, which contributed significantly to the BCHF’s success as an organization.

We were also touched and grateful when we learned that, in lieu of flowers, people are being encouraged to donate to our Foundation. Thank you to everyone who donated! The Harry McWatters Legacy Fund will continue to help workers in the hospitality industry, a sector which meant so much to Harry. Please visit us online if you would like to donate.

Thank you, Harry! We will miss you.

Beneficiaries update
Welcome to the BCHF’s New Beneficiary Liaison

We’re pleased to announce that Alan Sacks has agreed to take on the position of Beneficiary Liaison at the BCHF. The role is an important one, as the Beneficiary Liaison makes initial contact with individuals who apply for emergency financial assistance from our organization. The Beneficiary Liaison interviews the Applicant, confirms the information included in their submission, and prepares a report for the Beneficiary Application Committee. The Committee then considers the report and makes a recommendation to the Board of Directors about whether or not an application should be approved.

Alan Sacks brings a wealth of skills, experience, and organizational background to the work, as he has in the past been the BCHF’s Executive Director and Friend of the Foundation. We look forward to his contribution in this new role.

The BCHF is grateful to Bing Smith for the excellent work he did while he held the position. Bing was a Board Member and Board Chair for more than three years before becoming Beneficiary Liaison. Thank you, Bing!

Applicants

The BCHF continues to have a busy year when it comes to providing emergency financial assistance to hospitality workers facing financial crisis due to a medical situation. So far in 2019 we’ve helped 21 beneficiaries with a total of $62,180.

If you know someone who might be eligible for our assistance, please direct them to our application page .  And keep spreading the word about our mission – and the fundraisers that make our work possible!

 Thank you!
Scholarships update
Nik Lim Legacy Scholarship

We were saddened by the passing of Chef Nik Lim on July 10, 2019. Chef Lim was one of the brightest lights on Vancouver’s culinary scene, and though he was quite young, he had already established a reputation for excellence in his profession and was much beloved for his generosity in mentoring others.

Shortly after Chef Lim’s passing, his colleagues Nessa van Bergen and Chef Dino Renaerts reached out to us with the idea of creating a scholarship to honour Chef Lim’s memory. We were happy to facilitate the project, and over several weeks we received more than $11,000.00 in donations.

Thank you to everyone who donated! We are still accepting donations online for the scholarship, which will be administered by the BCHF, so we can continue his legacy of mentorship into the future.
