Saying thank you and goodbye to our ERD friends in Paradise.
Though the Camp fire happened nine months ago, the long-term recovery strategy for the fire survivors and their neighbors is still very much at work. Representatives from Episcopal Relief & Development flew into the diocese last week to meet and talk with those involved in the recovery effort. The meeting took place on Tuesday, July 9, at St. John’s, Chico. Also attending the day’s events were the bishop, members of her staff, diocesan leaders, and clergy and parishioners from St. Nicholas’, Paradise; St John’s, Chico; and St. Timothy’s, Gridley.

A meeting with the Bishop and her staff was followed by a plenary session with all attending. During that time, ERD Representatives, the Very Rev. Canon Michael Bamberger and the Rev. Patty Baker, took time to teach about disasters, how they affect people who are survivors and those who support them. St. John’s, Chico, provided a lunch, and then Canon Michael and Rev. Patty went to tour the fire zone and observe the difference from their last visit about two weeks after the fire.

We are grateful for the support and care we receive from this remarkable organization.

Camp Fire gift cards for those struggling to make ends meet
St. John's, Chico, continues to be actively involved in helping folks impacted by the Camp Fire in Paradise. As a part of this work, the church is requesting gift cards that they can hand out to those who need assistance. Specifically, they have found that Safeway cards are the best as recipients can use them for either gas or groceries. The gift cards can be mailed directly to St. John’s, Chico (address below).

Presiding Bishop issues video message on immigration: ‘Who is my neighbor?’
“Deeply embedded in the Christian faith, indeed deeply embedded in the Jewish tradition, which is the mother of the Christian faith, and deeply embedded in the faith and traditions and values of many of the world’s great religions, is a profound conviction in a sure and certain value and virtue that care for the stranger, the alien, the visitor, is a sacred duty, a sacred vow.”
