Where Is My Blue Card?
Fremont Township Assessor Joe Herchenbach wants you to know that due to the implementation of the new county assessment system, the blue assessment cards will arrive a little later this year. He anticipates a mid August arrival. Just a reminder that if you find the assessment is inaccurate please contact the assessor's office before hiring an attorney to appeal. He may be able to address the discrepancy on a local level with sufficient evidence. There is only a 30 day opportunity to appeal.
Beware of Ruse Burglaries
Ruse burglaries are committed by offenders generally travelling in pairs. One offender uses a ‘ruse’ to distract the victim, while the other offender enters the home to search for and steal cash, jewelry and other items. Ruse burglaries occur when victims are physically present at the home and distracted by a ‘ruse'. Every year we hear of the ruse burglaries in Lake County. This is just a reminder to be on guard for this. Safety Tips

The burglars will sometimes pose as traveling handymen or utility company workers (phone company, water company, county assessor etc.). The subjects will attempt to gain entry from a homeowner through some sort of ruse (Ex: a water pipe is broken down the street and they need access to the basement), and while the homeowner is distracted, their accomplices are committing a burglary. They also drive the area looking for people working in their yards and subjects will enter your house through an unlocked door while the homeowner is unaware outside. Working in groups of two (2) or three (3), a woman and child will approach a homeowner and ask if the child can use the bathroom. The unsuspecting homeowner allows the child to use the bathroom and the woman will distract the homeowner while someone else enters the home and commits a burglary.

The Fremont Township Highway and Assessor’s employees all have ID’s, and unless there is an emergency do not work on weekends.

Dispose of Prescription Drugs Correctly
The fight against opioid addiction starts at home; unused or expired medications are one of the contributing factors that can lead to a prescription opioid addiction. A majority of misused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends and often from the home's medicine cabinet.

It is up to all of us to dispose of our prescription drugs correctly. Never flush them and don’t keep them if they aren’t medication you are currently prescribed.

If you have prescription and non-prescription drugs in your house that need to be discarded, most police departments in Lake County accept them. Click here to find the closest location to you.
