MOA and Tri-County Component Societies Host Leg Huddle

The MOA will host the 15th Annual Autumn Scientific Convention at the Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids, Nov. 8 - 10, 2019. Network with colleagues, visit the Scientific Research Exhibit Competition and visit with exhibitors during a compelling and educational weekend. This event has seen tremendous growth since its humble beginnings in 2004. Educational CME opportunity to earn 24-26 AOA Category 1-A credits. The MOA has a limited number of rooms reserved with a group rate discount at the Amway Grand Plaza (link is below).
Autumn Convention SRE Competition
The
Scientific Research Exhibit (SRE) competition is accepting submissions. Cash prizes and awards await SRE presenters. The Autumn Convention SRE in Grand Rapids is growing each year.
The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2019
. Participants notified by October 11 of acceptance
Competition is Saturday, November 9.

Terrie Taylor, DO, will present on International Medicine. Dr. Taylor's battle against malaria, which she refers to as the "Voldemort of parasites," has been waged since 1986.
An internationally recognized scientist and physician, Terrie spends six months of the year in the African nation of Malawi, conducting malaria research and treating patients, the vast majority of whom are children.
The MOA Autumn Scientific Convention will host Dr. Taylor's presentation, "International Medicine," on Saturday, Nov. 9, 1:15 - 2:15 pm in the Ambassador East room.

Interstate Medical Licensure Compact Enacted
In 2018 the Michigan's Governor signed into law Public Act 524 of 2018 and Public Act 563 of 2018 which made Michigan a member of the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact Commission (IMLCC). The compact allows physicians (both DOs and MDs) who are licensed in other compact member states the ability to get licensed easier in the State of Michigan based on having a compact license. It also allows Michigan physicians to get licensed in other compact member states.
This program was implemented September 24, 2019, so Michigan physicians, and physicians in other compact states, will be able to take advantage of the IMLCC.

The MOA joins CPAN and others to harness the enthusiasm, tenacity, and commitment so many have voiced to continue fighting to ensure that those injured in auto accidents can receive the care they need to recover. There is a long road ahead to either improve or repeal the recently enacted law, PA 21: the Michigan Auto Insurance Law. The public needs to know just exactly what choices they will be able to make and be aware of the risks they are now exposed to whenever they enter a vehicle.
Join Michigan Brain Injury Providers Council (MBIPC), Concerned Association of Patients and Providers (CAPP), Brain Injury Association of MI (BIAMI), CPAN and thousands of members, organizations, and survivors on September 25, 2019 as we rally in front of Michigan's State Capitol. Doors open at 9:00 AM at the Lansing Center, 10:00 AM check-in with pre-rally activities, 10:30 AM Pep-Rally followed by a march down Michigan Ave. to the Capitol steps at 11:00 AM with a rally and speakers to follow at 11:30 AM. Rally concludes about 12:30 PM.

More doctors are choosing to work part-time
DOs share how they made the switch from full-time to part-time and what this change has meant for their quality of life.
When Errin Weisman, DO, was practicing family medicine full time, every day felt like a battle to stay afloat.
"It was like the days I was in the clinic, I was diving to the bottom of the pool," she says. "The days that I was off, it was like I'd come up for a fresh breath of air."
Long shifts and endless rounds of grinding through an electronic medical records system and seeking prior authorizations on the phone had worn down the Indiana-based physician.
Recognizing that she was burned out, Dr. Weisman switched from full-time work to part-time hours. That was four years ago. These days, she typically spends between two and five hours in the mornings working as an attending physician at Crossroads Behavioral Health Hospital in Huntingburg, Indiana. In the afternoons, she works as a life coach and podcaster at
Truth Prescriptions. And she is much happier.
"I still get to take care of patients and I still get to practice without the time burden," she says. "I feel like I have a life outside of the office-like I'm an actual person."
A growing trend
Dr. Weisman is among a growing number of doctors adding part-time work to their resumes.
Some look to part-time gigs as a source of "side income" and continue to work full-time jobs as well. But many others downshift permanently to a part-time schedule, says Travis Singleton, executive vice president at Merritt Hawkins, a physician search and recruitment firm.
Nearly 10 percent of physicians reported working 30 hours or less per week-including clinical and nonclinical tasks-in 2018, according to a joint
survey
of about 700,000 doctors by Merritt Hawkins and the Physicians Foundation. That's a 16% increase from the number of physicians working 30 hours or less weekly in 2012.

The MOA joined numerous medical organizations to support Michigan's efforts to limit the spread of vaping to children. In this "Throwback Thursday" we hoped to remind folks that marketing dangerous products to children was once an acceptable practice. Times have changed.

State takes action to halt Eastern Equine Encephalitis
State residents are being strongly advised by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) to protect themselves from mosquito bites as four additional cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) have been confirmed in Southwest Michigan - including two that were fatal.
MDHHS is encouraging local officials in the five Southwest Michigan counties that have been impacted by human EEE cases and St. Joseph, Genesee and Lapeer counties - which have had animal EEE cases - to consider postponing, rescheduling or cancelling outdoor
activities occurring at or after dusk, particularly activities that involve children. This would
include events such as late evening sports practices or games or outdoor music practices.
The MDHHS recommendation is being made out of an abundance of caution to protect the
public health and applies until the first hard frost of the year.
All Michigan residents can stay healthy by following these steps to avoid mosquito bites:
· Apply insect repellents that contain the active ingredient DEET, or other U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency-registered product to exposed skin or clothing,
and always follow the manufacturer's directions for use.
· Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors. Apply insect repellent to
clothing to help prevent bites.
· Maintain window and door screening to help keep mosquitoes outside.
· Empty water from mosquito breeding sites around the home, such as buckets,
unused kiddie pools, old tires or similar sites where mosquitoes may lay eggs.
· Use nets and/or fans over outdoor eating areas.
