Meet Some Next Step Participants
The American Stroke Foundation Next Step Program is a wellness program to help people who have had a stroke continue to improve and regain independence in daily living skills.
Meet Rod
by Christina Flucke, OT Student
Rod is a relatively new participant at the American Stroke Foundation (ASF) Next Step Program, but he is growing more comfortable every day. Rod is the proud father of three grown children who currently live in Oklahoma. Luckily, he is also the uncle to two rambunctious little girls that live nearby him. Rod has a fantastic support system with his sister and brother-in-law who are able to help him whenever possible. Outside of ASF, Rod likes swimming, watching sports, and spending time with his family. He tries to stay active and participate in life.
He loves to participate in all of the activities ASF has to offer, such as cardio exercises, aquatic therapy, and brain games. He's a whizz at the trivia games and his sense of humor is always capable of putting a smile on the faces of everyone. He is glad he has been able to participate in ASF because of the camaraderie he has found among the survivors. He enjoys hearing the different stories the participants share with him, and they help him realize he is not alone in his struggles and difficulties.
Life after his stroke was completely turned upside down. He often finds himself frustrated by tasks that used to be simple such as getting ready every day and going about his regular activities. He is continuously working to improve movement in his arms and legs, and believes ASF can help him do this.
Rod wants people to enjoy every single day and never take anything for granted. He is a caring and frank person that is willing to talk about his experiences and help those around him when they may be having a hard time.

More Next Step Participants
Meet Dottie
by Megan Knoff, OT Student
Dottie sustained a stroke five years ago while vacationing in Florida. She has been attending the American Stroke Foundation (ASF) for the past four years and can be found decked out in a fashionable outfit and making those around her laugh.
Her favorite things to do at the American Stroke Foundation are engage in creative conversations, exercise, and swimming. She loves conversing with everyone during creative conversations and explains that it's special to spend time with those who understand her and her experiences post-stroke. Dottie loves keeping her body moving with exercises and swimming, and she especially enjoys the freedom to move without fear of falling while in the pool.
Outside of the program, Dottie loves to spend time with her husband, Ken, whom she met while serving three years in the U.S. Army and has been married to for 52 years! She and Ken have two kids and seven grandchildren, all who live nearby. Together, they enjoy going out to eat and to the movies. Dottie loves classical music but wishes she could sing like she used to, as this is a challenge for her since having a stroke. However, she continues to play the piano daily.
Dottie says that, from life, she has learned to be appreciative and more thankful. She feels that ASF has changed her view of life as it has allowed her to exercise more, socialize, and connect with others who have been through similar experiences. Dottie explains that the people at ASF are special and notes, "a lot of them laugh a lot".
Meet Troy
by Natalie Winn, OTA Student
Troy has been a participant of the ASF program for the past 5 years, spreading laughter with his eventful stories and infectious smile. Considering himself to be a great source of emotional support, Troy continues to motivate his fellow participants as they travel their journey through stroke recovery. With a Broncos hat on his head and newspaper always nearby, this father of 2 and grandfather to 1 (with one on the way) prides himself on family, friendship, and fun!
Prior to his stroke in February 2013, Troy could be found working as a carpenter/construction worker, and is no stranger to hard work! Priding himself on the fact that he has been working since he began helping his father at 12 years old, Troy was taught at a young age the meaning of hard work and dedication, which he has continued to implement throughout his lifetime.
Although life after stroke may present itself differently than it had before, Troy works hard towards his goals with a smile on his face even when things are difficult. When discussing how life has changed post stroke, Troy states his biggest disappointment was losing his privilege to drive, but has been able to assert his independence in other ways so he can still continue to participate in things that are meaningful to him.
Equipped with endless determination to maintain his independence, Troy continues to keep pushing himself daily, and finds coming to ASF has helped him tremendously throughout his recovery. When asked what has kept him coming for the past 5 years, Troy states he enjoys exercising, discussing topics with peers, the emotional support he receives, and the friendships he has made that extend outside the program. As Troy describes it, some of the best support he has in his life comes from those he has met while in the ASF program and he looks forward to coming back each Monday and values the friendships he has made throughout the years.
