Greg Podgorski, associate professor in Utah State University’s Department of Biology, has been named associate dean for undergraduate programs and services for the university’s College of Science. He succeeds Richard Mueller, who recently retired from the post after 37 years of service with the university. Podgorski assumed his new post July 1.

“We’re delighted to welcome Greg to this new position,” says USU Science Dean Maura Hagan. “Greg brings a wealth of experience, expertise and enthusiasm, which will greatly benefit our students.”

Podgorski’s duties will focus on undergraduate student affairs, including oversight of recruitment, advising, instruction, curriculum, retention and undergraduate research...

Undergraduate research is an excellent opportunity to learn about your field, make new connections and stand out in your graduate school/job applications.

With ground-breaking research taking place across our departments, we encourage undergraduate students to contact their department's  Undergraduate Research Coordinator  to find labs and researchers to work with at USU. Whether you're interested in plant science, random forests, climate change, nonlinear dynamics, machine learning, or cell chemistry, among so many other topics, there's a place for you in undergraduate research!  Review faculty research interests  to find a professor, who is investigating a topic you are interested in.

Applications for the Spring 2020 URCO Grant  open on October 1st, 2019 and close October 15th. Make sure to meet with your faculty mentor to plan your application ASAP!

Welcome, Department Heads Jim Powell, Xiaojun Qi, and Lance Seefeldt
As of July 1st, we welcome the Department of Computer Science and its department head Dr. Xiaojun Qi to the college, along with Dr. Lance Seefeldt as the new department head of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Dr. Jim Powell as the interim department head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Dr. Qi has served as the department head of Computer Science since early 2017. Since joining the department as a faculty member in 2002, her research and teaching interests have included pattern recognition, steganalysis, digital image processing, machine learning and computer vision.

Dr. Seefeldt has been a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry since 1993, where he's taught courses in chemistry, biochemistry, and bioenergetics. He recently co-chaired a gathering of nitrogen research experts convened by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Dr. Powell's teaching and research focus on applied mathematics, asymptotic analysis, dynamical systems and nonlinear parameter estimation. He started at USU in 1991, and has since received the College of Science Teacher of the Year award (2001) and the Researcher of the Year award (2008).
Science Unwrapped, the college's science outreach program is in its 11th year of operation. Monthly lectures by USU faculty will coincide with this year's theme "Food for Thought", and students are encouraged to get involved with this valuable opportunity to gain experience with science outreach, learning activity organization, and community service.
