Message from ILS Chair Carlos F. Osorio
Dear ILS Members:
 
We look forward to seeing you this coming February 22nd in Downtown Miami for the 2019 iLaw (with ICDR Arbitration track) which will be held at the JW Marriott Marquis.  You are certain to experience a top-notch international law conference with distinguished panelists, judges and arbitrators from the international law community, from the US and abroad, covering topics ranging from transactions, tax, litigation and arbitration.   Many thanks to the AAA (American Arbitration Association), our event partner.  
 
We kick-off the iLaw conference with a welcome cocktail the evening of the 21st at 6:30 p.m. at Shutts & Bowen, LLP, 200 South Biscayne
Boulevard, Suite 4100, Miami, for those who have registered for the event.
   If you have not registered, the registration brochure is provided below, and walk-ins are accepted.  Just prior to the cocktail, if you would like to participate in the ILS's mid-year
meeting and are an ILS member, join us starting at 4:30 p.m. at Shutts & Bowen for our
 official mid-year meeting.  All ILS members are welcome and it is your best opportunity to get involved in the Section and join our numerous, vibrant committees.  
 
After the iLaw, be sure not to miss the 2019 Richard DeWitt Vis Pre-Moot competition featuring five Florida law schools (UM, FIU, UF, FSU and Stetson), February 23rd.  The Vis will be held at JAMS Miami Resolution Center in Brickell and begins at 9:00 a.m.  Many thanks to JAMS, our host and a Section sponsor. 
 
Following the 2019 iLaw and Vis Competition, stand-by for news as to other great events we will have, including an inaugural Human Rights themed all-day conference planned for April 19th at the University of Miami, Newman Alumni Center, as well as other great events that are in the works, including an off-shore conference to complement the highly-successful, inaugural India Conference from November 2018 .

Executive Council Meeting - TODAY

In advance of the iLaw2019 Annual Conference, the Florida Bar International Law Section will hold its Mid-Year Executive Council Meeting on Thursday,
February 21, 2019, at Shutts & Bowen LLP, 200 South Biscayne 
Boulevard, Suite 4100, Miami, Florida 33131, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  
 
Also on February 21, 2019, immediately following the Executive Council Meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. will be the iLaw2019 Opening Cocktail

Vis Pre-Moot 2019
VOLUNTEER ARBITRATORS STILL NEEDED
 
The Florida Bar International Law Section will hold its  2019 Richard DeWitt Memorial Vis Pre-Moot  on  Saturday, February 23, 2019   at JAMS Miami Resolution Center in Brickell. We hope you will join this important event as a Volunteer Arbitrator.  CLE credits will be provided for this event, and an award ceremony will follow the pre-moot along with a happy hour at Better Days! 
 
The ILS Vis Pre-Moot all-day event prepares law students from the largest law schools in Florida and beyond for the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna. The daylong event includes four rounds between the competing law schools with South Florida practitioners serving as arbitrators.
 
We still need volunteer arbitrators for both the morning and afternoon rounds, which are scheduled as follows:
 
AM ROUNDS
Round 1 - 9:00 AM
Round 2 - 10:45 AM
 
PM ROUNDS
Round 3 - 1:30 PM
Round 4 - 3:15 PM

International Law Quarterly - Call for Articles

The editorial board of the International Law Quarterly is now requesting articles and proposals for the  Spring 2019 ILQ to be released before (and highlighted at) The Florida Bar annual convention in June.  Although proposals will be considered on any relevant international topic, the Spring ILQ will focus on  "International Cross-Border Investing."  We hope to have articles on a variety of topics, such as tax implications of cross-border investments, ICSID issues and recent cases, energy/infrastructure projects, pre-immigration tax planning, Brexit impact in UK and EU, investment in Cuba, and much more.  But we need your help to make this edition of the ILQ a success.
 
Drafts will be due from authors by early April 2019.  Please send your article proposals to Ana Barton ( abarton@reedsmith.com) and Laura Reich ( laura@reichrodriguez.com) as soon as possible. 

Call for Volunteers - ILS Human Rights Conference

The ILS Committee on Human Rights, Public International Law and Global Justice is seeking volunteers to assist in planning our upcoming CLE conference on human rights and the challenge of defending them in Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela to be held on April 19th at the Newman Alumni Center in Coral Gables.  The conference will be organized around three tracks each dedicated to one of the three countries of interest, with an opening and closing plenary.  ILS members interested in planning and/or participating in the conference should send an email to the Committee co-chairs, Professor Elizabeth Iglesias at iglesias@law.miami.edu and Mr. Richard Alton, Esq. at racaesq@gmail.com by no later than Wednesday February 13th
Advancing Strategic Partnerships with India

The Asia committee is inviting all ILS members to join a summit on "Advancing Strategic Partnerships with India" on March 21, 2019 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Patricia & Philipp Frost Art Museum, Modesto Maidique Campus, Florida International University in Miami.
 
The summit will also focus on the Bar Cooperation Agreement between the Indian National Bar Association and The Florida Bar International Law Section that was signed on November 26, 2018 in New Delhi and its purpose and potential for practitioners and academics. March 20-22, 2019
The International Bar Association ("IBA") Latin American Regional Forum and the IBA Corporate and M&A Law Committee will host the conference "Mergers and Acquisitions in Latin America: Challenges and Best Practices in the Era of Compliance" in Santiago, Chile, March 20-22, 2019.  Latin America has experienced important changes and new challenges to mergers and acquisitions activity during the last few years. Compliance and best practice have arrived in all jurisdictions, companies and law firms, and they are now part of a new landscape. Uncertainties are being left behind, but there is a lot to do to continue the growth in developing Latin American economies, with a new political spectrum in most of the countries. This Conference will address these changes and challenges, as well as the opportunities that the implementation of best practice can create, opening the M&A activity in the region to more investors around the world. The North American Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators will hold its Accelerated Route to Fellowship Program in International Arbitration in Miami, Florida.

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) is offering joint three-day international arbitration training and qualification program, leading to CIArb's prestigious Fellow status. The three-day Accelerated Route to Fellowship program will take place at JAMS in Miami, FL, April 28-30, 2019.  The program designed for senior practitioners in the field of dispute resolution.
