The Men's Group Seminar: Mistakes and Regret: Unpacking the "Drag" Forces of Living *
10:15 to 11:30 AM

In our last meeting, we began to explore how the notion of "drag" (common in considerations of inadvertent resistances athletes confront in a variety of sports) may be applied to daily living. This inquiry first led us to consider the ways in which writers and thinkers approach the notion of optimal living . Our discussion moved to the realization that, as in drag forces in sports, we as people are a lot like athletes: we are largely if not completely unaware of how we are burdening our forward motion, efficiency, and speed.  In the next meeting of the Men’s Group Seminar on Saturday, July 20, 2019 (10:15 to 11:30 AM), we will pick up from this point by considering the role of mistakes in daily life. As it turns out, the scientific literature has defined numerous types of mistakes, some of which are more insidious and damaging to one's momentum than others. Next, we will broach the topic of regret and consider the ways in which mistakes interact with regret throughout the life course.  Our focus will be on attempting to determine how one can become more keenly aware of his most repetitive mistakes and tendencies, especially those that yield the most challenging obstructions to forward progress.
The Relationship Group Seminar: Control and Surrender *
11:45 AM to 1:00 PM

Many problems, conflicts and discontentments in adult life, especially those associated with intimate relationships, are painful and difficult to resolve for one very important reason. It is the psychological assumption born in childhood that we can influence, or even control, the nature of what occurs in our lives as well as the fate of our relationships. The child's primitive and narrowly-developed ego cannot recognize the limitations of others, especially persons who are depended upon such as parents. As a result, the child assumes that he or she must be the sole reason why "bad" things happen; and, in the child's mind, he or she is not only the cause of these bad things but also the one who holds the responsibility for making things right. This presumption, and the many beliefs and emotions that evolve over time in connection with it, destroy self-esteem and negatively impact one's capacity to interface with the constraints of people and situations.

An important milestone in adult development is the recognition of how this presumptive style of childhood has lingered and influenced one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This recognition can free you to achieve a position of "surrender." Surrendering does not involve a passive withdrawal or pessimistic attitude toward what we can impact in our lives. Rather, surrender involves the capacity to identify, accept and react productively to the limitations of others.

In the next meeting of the Relationship Group Seminar on Saturday, July 20, 2019 (11:45 AM to 1:00 PM), we will explore the mental states of childhood that are oriented toward control and consider the ways in which these preoccupations are perpetuated to our detriment. Next, we will consider the concept of surrender and its often challenging but rewarding consequences.

The Dynamic Psychotherapy Process Group *
 1:15 to 2:30 PM

This therapy group utilizes the emerging dynamics among group members, and between the group members and facilitator, as a basis from which to examine one's characteristic ways of thinking, feeling, and relating to others.  Our next group session will be on Saturday, July 20, 2019 (1:15 to 2:30 PM) at the Laguna Hills office location.
