9:15 am Drop In Discussion: The Four Elements of Success by Laurie Beth Jones: This book discusses different inherent personality types and the interaction between them. Hopefully we can discover what types or combinations of types we are and why we tend to get along with some and have friction with others. Robert Remley will lead this discussion.

The topic for or Drop In Discussion on September 23 will be, Is Social Media Toxic?

10:30 am Morning Servi ce:   Our Testimony Matters. Inspired by the memoir from Black Lives Matter co-founder, Patrisse Khan-Cullors, When They Call You a Terrorist , let’s explore the ways telling our stories can be a heart-healing, eye-opening, and life-giving experience for both the storyteller as well as people listening. Continuing our series about Testimony, this memoir was one of First Universalist’s summer reads in the Summer Book Club, as this church community continues in a process of education about systemic racism. What stories do you have to tell about your experience?

Please sign up! You may also contact her at minister@uuroc.org .
AED TRAINING

A brand new Phillips HeartStart AED has been purchased by a very generous member of our First Universalist congregation and is mounted in the area between the sanctuary and the Clara Barton Lounge, near the administrator's office. It is labeled “AED.” Please join us for classes in using the AED and saving a life on September 9, or 16. You can participate in an American Heart Association class led by instructor Kate Fleury, RN, BSN. The classes will be held in the sanctuary at 12:30 pm on Sundays after church. You will learn basic CPR and use of an AED so you can be a more prepared hero. There is no written test to receive a certificate of attendance!
MOCHA

Eager to once again have conversations with your church friends? Missed the munchies and coffee provided by the volunteers, after the Sunday morning service? Then MOCHA is for you! Beginning September 9, and going thru until mid June, will be that social hour that we all look forward to. We hope that you will be a part of this ministry - the fabric that holds us together!
    BOOK CLUB

Our Book selection for September is The Lightkeepers by Abbi Geni. This book has a little something for everyone's taste. A truly interesting and thought provoking read. Please join us September 30 at 12:15 pm in the Chalice Room located on the 2nd floor. It is not necessary to have read the book to join the
discussion. It helps though! Questions? Contact Shirley Bond or Sarah Singal via office@uuroc.org .

Additional Announcements

Presenting Brock Tjosvold, Music Director

Last Saturday, August 18, 2018, members of the choir gathered in the sanctuary to audition two Music Director finalist candidates. Each candidate played the organ and then led the choir in a rehearsal; they then proceeded to an interview with Rev. Lane and the Personnel Committee. We chose Brock Tjosvold, a Nebraskan who is now embarking on graduate studies at the Eastman School of Music. He will “debut” with us this Sunday, September 9. We are delighted to welcome this talented, warm, and personable young man to our staff!

SCHOOL 7 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: “Volunteer in a city school. Read to a youngster. Become a mentor and give youngsters a chance to see beyond the borders of their neighborhood. Make friends with families who need a hand up, not a handout.” These recommendations were made by Elizabeth Osta in City Newspaper August 22, 2018. They remind us that First Universalist has had a relationship with School 7 for a number of years in which we have had volunteers doing what Elizabeth recommended. Think of some way in which you can “make friends with families who need a hand up.” Talk with Bill, Eileen or Jose. Make a difference in one person’s life. You don’t need to be a certified teacher. You just need to care.
PEACE VIGIL: Join us Sundays at Noon until 1 pm at the intersection of Goodman St and East Ave. Rain, snow or shine. We began in 2002, before the invasion and occupation of Iraq, and have continued weekly since 2003. Make your sign, our use one of ours. For questions, call Hal Bauer, 585-335-2623, or ask Rev. Lane about her August 2018 vigil experience.
FROM THE GARDEN: We have heard thanks for strawberries, zucchini, cucumbers, the first tomatoes, herbs and flowers along Clinton Ave. and Court Streets from individuals in the neighborhood and from St Joe's House of Hospitality. And in turn we thank our team of garden waterers and mother nature! It would be helpful if we had names and contact information of the good people composting at church. Please let Sarah Singal know who you are! Thanks! garden@uuroc.org .
RAIHN MATCH: We have exceeded our goal and have raised $1,375 for the R ochester A rea I nterfaith H ospitality N etwork match and a friend of the congregation will donate $2,000. The total of $3,745 will be sent to the RAIHN Day Center to make improvements for comfort and security. Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible.
PROJECT TEAM SUGGESTIONS: The Project Team consists of members who have been approved by the Board of Trustees. The team reports to FIAC (Faith In Action Council) fiac@uuroc.org and the Board and is tasked to come up with and submit a recommendation on a targeted project for congregational involvement that satisfies our mission of dealing with systemic racism in Rochester. The Project Team welcomes your suggestions and comments at
CHURCH LIBRARY & BOOKSTORE HOURS: The First Universalist Church library and bookstore are open each Sunday during MOCHA (coffee hour) for browsing, borrowing and buying. We have new books for sale at half price, donated books for sale for 50 cents, free children's books and a free magazine exchange, as well as a lending library for members and regular attenders.
PLEASE RETURN:  If you have borrowed Patrisse-Khan-Cullor's When They Call You a Terrorist from the church library, please return it as soon as you have finished reading it so that others may borrow it.
