Director's Notes

The Library will be closed on Monday, October 14th,
in observance of Columbus Day. 

We will open at 10:00am on Tuesday, October 15th.

ADULT EVENTS
Special Exhibit: Extraordinary Women of the East Bay
Exhibit runs through October 12th, throughout the Library
The Tiverton Public Library will continue to host the Extraordinary Women of East Bay exhibit through October 12th. 

This special exhibit recognizes and celebrates 60 women who have made a difference in their East Bay communities. Roger Williams University Archivist Heidi Benedict has created this special exhibition that recognizes women from Barrington, Bristol, Jamestown, Little Compton, Middletown, Newport, Portsmouth, Tiverton, and Warren. Sixteen local historical societies, museums, and libraries have contributed to the exhibit.
Retro Game Club: Monster Mash
Tuesday, October 1st, 6:30-8:00pm, Community Room
Kick off the Halloween season at Retro Game Club's all ages Monster Mash! Join us in the Community Room as we play a variety of classic games that are creepy, kooky, and altogether spooky. 

Costumes are welcome and candy will be provided. This is an all ages event featuring games with an ESRB rating ranging from "E for Everyone" to "T for Teen." Visit www.esrb.org/ratings-guide for rating details.

Quilt Club
Wednesday, October 2nd, 5:30-7:30pm, Learning Center
Do you like to quilt? Then come and quilt with us on the first Wednesday of each month from 5:30 to 7:30pm. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned pro, you are welcome to come and work on your own projects while socializing with fellow enthusiasts. Get project ideas, ask questions, and share tips and advice. Must bring your own projects and supplies.

Solar Workshop with NEC Solar
Wednesday, October 2nd, 6:00-8:00pm, Community Room
The Tiverton Public Library is hosting a free educational workshop series with local environmental activist and solar consultant, Dana Goodman, courtesy of NEC Solar. 

In this fun, interactive workshop, you will learn solar electricity science and technology basics, the installation process, the best conditions for going solar, and federal and state incentive programs. Click here to register.
CreaTiv Crafts
Thursday, October 3rd, 3:30-4:30pm, Community Room
Join us on the first Thursday of every month for some fun and creativity.  This month, we will be making pumpkins out of old paperbacks. 

All materials are provided. Please register to reserve your spot.
Steel Guitar Concert with Peter Biedermann
Monday, October 7th, 6:30-7:30pm, Community Room
Peter Biedermann is a solo instrumental guitarist based in Green Valley, AZ, who has been composing and performing for over 40 years and will be appearing for the second time at the Tiverton Public Library. His hybrid, contemporary style melds elements of American and European folk with jazz and blues shadings, underpinned by subtle ambient electronics.

Peter will be focusing on pieces from his latest recording Tales From The Desert on a variety of guitars in unique tunings. The program encourages questions from the audience and will also include some of the history and evolution of steel string guitar playing over the last 50+ years. Fans of fellow guitarists such as Michael Hedges, the British school (Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Davy Graham), Alex de Grassi, and Pierre Bensusan will enjoy this music.
Cookbook Club

A book club with a tasty twist! We read cookbooks and come together to share the tasty recipes that lie inside their pages. This month we'll be sampling recipes from cookbooks by Jessica Seinfeld.

Inebri-Art Q&A and Live Podcast
Saturday, October 12th, 12:00-2:00pm, Community Room
Inebri-Art was born on a bar stool in Plymouth, MA, back in 2011, when three friends decided to meet once a week to draw and have a few drinks. Fast forward 8 years, and it has become a multifaceted visual and performing arts promoting machine. One of the most well-known branches of Inebri-Art is its Podcast network. Starting off with a simple show uploaded twice a month, within a year there where 4 shows uploading 10+ episodes a month. Three and a half years later their show is now heard all over the world and in almost every state in the USA.

Join Andy (host and producer and one of the founders of Inebri-Art) for a brief history of Inebri-Art, an audience Q&A answering all your podcast questions, and a live recording of the Inebri-Art show.
Free Workshop: Finding Jobs Online with Google 
Tuesdays (6:00pm) & Wednesdays (12:00pm), October 15th-23rd, Learning Center 
Learn how to use your Google Account to search for jobs, build and edit a resume, and apply for jobs online. Topics include navigating job postings, creating a resume in Google Docs, and submitting an application online. 

Classes run Tuesdays and Wednesdays, October 15th to 23rd. Space is limited and registration is required. Choose a date below to register:

Adult Knitting Meet-Up
Tuesday, October 15th, 5:30-8:00pm, Trustees Room
A casual meeting for knitters looking to work on their projects with others who enjoy knitting and crocheting. Join us on the Third Tuesday of the month to meet and socialize with local knitters. Must bring your own projects and supplies.
2020 Census Jobs Presentation
Wednesday, October 16th, 7:00-8:00pm, Community Room
The U.S. Census Bureau is recruiting thousands of people across the country to assist with the 2020 Census count. This information session will describe local opportunities to earn extra income while helping your community.
Painting Landscapes
Thursday, October 24th, 4:00-6:00pm, Community Room
In this two-hour session, local artist John Irwin will take you step by step through the process of starting a seascape painting and deciding when it is finished. All materials are provided.

This is a popular class, and space fills up quickly. Registration opens on October 17th at 4:00pm. No exceptions. You can register in person, online, or by calling 401-625-6796 after 4:00pm on October 17th.
Adult Game Night
Thursday, October 24th, 7:00-9:00pm, Community Room
Join us for a laid back game night at the library. Play one of our games, ranging from board-building strategy to trivia-style games and more, or bring your own! 

Snacks are provided; outside snacks are also welcome.
Free Movie: Bohemian Rhapsody

Join us for a showing of Bohemian Rhapsody (2018; PG-13; 2h, 14min) on the big screen!

BOOK GROUPS FOR OCTOBER
Tiverton Senior Center Book Group
Tuesday, October 8th, 10:15-11:15am, Tiverton Senior Center, 207 Canonicus Street
Please note that this book group will now be meeting on the Second Tuesday of each month. We will be reading Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult. 

Copies of the book are available at Tiverton Public Library and in the office at the Senior Center.
YA Book Club for Adults
Tuesday, October 8th, 6:00-7:30pm, Learning Center
This is a traditional book club that meets on the second Tuesday evening of each month (due to scheduling, meeting date may occasionally be the third Tuesday of the month). This is a book group intended for "older" teens and adults. This month's book selection is Toil & Trouble: 15 Tales of Women & Witchcraft edited by Jessica Spotswood & Tess Sharpe. 

Copies are available for check out at the library. Teens must be at least in high school to attend this book group. Please see Rebecca with any questions.

Spirituality and Politics Book Group

'Spirituality and Politics' is a new book group to engender conversations about topics of faith and politics. This month, we will read Love Thy Neighbor: a Muslim Doctor's Struggle for Home in Rural America by Ayaz Virji with Alan Eisenstock.

For those of a particular religion or faith - or none - this book group seeks to provide a forum for participants to connect and discuss important spiritual and social topics.
Union Library Book Group

TEEN EVENTS
Inktober
All of October in the Teen Room
Inktober is an ink drawing challenge that happens each year in October. This challenge presents a daily prompt that is meant to encourage artists to draw daily, hone/improve their drawing skills, and develop positive drawing habits.

Teen Advisory Board

Come hang out and discuss titles that you are reading, tell us what you would like to see happen at the library, and eat some snacks! Earn a community service hour for attending!

Bring your lunch and join us for a dine-in showing of Paranorman projected on the big screen in our Community Room. Free popcorn and candy provided!

Look for our librarians at Trunk or Treat on October 26th. Deb and Meg will be there with a decorated car and some fun and yummy treats, including  a treat bucket with non-edible holiday surprises that are safe for friends with allergies.

Boo To You! A Not-So-Scary Storytime

Wear your costume and join Miss Meg and Mr. Monkey for a special holiday storytime and trick-or-treat parade through the library. Registration is not required. Seats will be distributed on a first-come basis.

October Storytimes
Storytime Adventures
Who: Children ages 3-5 years
When: Mondays - October 7th & 21st  (no Storytime October 14th or 28th ) 
Two Sessions: 10:15-11:00am & 11:15am-12:00pm
Where: Children's Activity Room
What: Join Mr. Monkey and Miss Meg for a storytime adventure. Each week, we will explore a fun and interesting topic as we share stories, sing songs, play games, and create a piece of art.
Limit: 18 preschoolers per session. Registration is not required. Seats will be distributed on a first-come basis.
Teeny Tiny Tales
Who: Children ages 1-2 years
When: Wednesdays - October 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd 
(Wednesday, October 31st, there will be a special all ages holiday storytime. Registration is requested.)
Two Sessions: 10:15-11:00am, 11:15am-12:00pm
Where: Children's Activity Room
What: Join Mr. Monkey and Miss Meg for stories and songs during this literacy-based playgroup for young patrons. The morning will begin with a short book and group activity, followed by time to play with our new friends.
Limit: 18 toddlers per session. Registration is not required. Seats will be distributed on a first-come basis.
Babies & Books
Who: Children ages 1 week to 12 months
When: Thursdays - October 3rd, 10th, 17th, & 24th
Time: 10:00-10:30am
Where: Little Readers Book Nook in the Children's Room
What: Join Little Library Bunny and Miss Meg for nursery rhymes, songs, finger plays, and stories while introducing your baby to the wonders of language.
Stories and activities have been chosen for non-walking infants.
Limit: 16 babies per session. Registration is not required. Seats will be distributed on a first-come basis.
