Remembering Paul Bruhn

We were saddened to hear the news last week that Paul Bruhn, executive director of Preservation Trust of Vermont (PTV), had passed away. In the announcement, Neale Lunderville, chair of PTV's board of directors, said
"As PTV's first and only executive director, Paul has been a tireless voice for building community and preserving the essential character of Vermont. "Few if any people have had a bigger impact on Vermont over the last forty years. . . We will miss him dearly."

Senator Patrick Leahy has known Paul for more than four decades. "His work on historic preservation is equal to the work that anyone has ever done for the State of Vermont," commented Senator Leahy. "Those countless success stories are preserved in brick, mortar, stone, and wood across our state . . . Paul felt to his core that we Vermonters have a rich legacy defined by our people, our history, our downtowns and village centers, as well as our iconic barns and covered bridges. Now he is part of Vermont's legacy. We'll never see another like Paul Bruhn."

BIG FROG Settles In

Attending the dedication ceremony were Agency of Natural Resources Secretary Julie Moore; Agency of Agriculture, Food, and Markets Secretary Anson Tebbetts; Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services Principal Assistant Erik Filkorn;  Vermont Arts Council Senior Program Manager Michele Bailey, and Jim Sardonis.
A bronze sculpture by Randolph artist Jim Sardonis was unveiled on September 20 at the entrance to the Vermont Agriculture and Environmental Laboratory on the Vermont Technical College campus in Randolph Center. BIG FROG was commissioned as part of the Vermont Art in State Buildings Program. The project was developed by a cross-sector partnership among the Vermont Arts Council and several state agencies including Buildings and General Services; the Agency of Natural Resources; and the Agency of Agriculture, Foods and Markets, as well as the Vermont Technical College, and members of the community.  
 
"Public art provides a visual mechanism for understanding other perspectives and reinforces social connections with people of different backgrounds and experiences," noted Vermont Arts Council Senior Program Manager Michele Bailey. "Involving multiple stakeholders in this project helped to build awareness of the importance a clean and healthy environment and the role of the arts in community."

The Vermont Creative Network is undertaking a research and planning project for Vermont's creative sector. The outcome will be a comprehensive action plan to advance the creative economy in the state.
