Three named Commended Students
Three seniors have been named Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Bryce Carl, Maria Popson, and Luke Rodski are among nearly 34,000 students throughout the country who are being recognized for placing among the top 50,000 scorers on the 2018 PSAT taken last fall.

Senior Amanda Pasierbowicz is a National Merit semifinalist, as announced last issue . Students enter the contest simply by taking the test. The three Commended Students will receive a certificate at the Senior Awards Ceremony in May.

Maria said she is pleased to be named a Commended Student and was surprised by the news because she finds it difficult to gauge her own performance on standardized tests.

“So that made it even more of a surprise when I was told I was commended,” she said.

She felt prepared to take the test last fall because many of her classes include methods to prepare for the test, whether critical thinking exercises or regular ACT practice problems in math class. She also had been doing practice work for the SAT and ACT in preparation for taking those tests.

Bryce agreed that his classes prepared him for his success in completing the PSAT. He also said that the PSAT was good practice for time management when taking the SAT and ACT.

Luke took the SAT as an eighth grader and said he felt confident going into the PSAT. Learning that he was named a Commended student was a “mixture of relief and also a proud moment,” since he was called down to the office to get the news.

At first, all three of them said they were worried that they might be in trouble, “until I saw it was all smart people down there with me,” Luke said. “It’s just a fun thing to find out.”

Maria and Luke plan to attend Purdue University and pursue engineering, with Maria wanting to focus on industrial engineering. Bryce is planning to apply to the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University Bloomington, and the University of Louisville to major in business and eventually law.

Vocal spray leads to new business for ’84 grad
Gina (Summers) Emerson ’84 didn’t intend to start her own company when she went looking for a natural, organic vocal spray. The person who had previously formulated one for her was retiring, so she turned to Rob Pappas ’85, Ph.D., a chemist with expertise in essential oils formulations. She had been reading about the benefits of CBD oil and followed his research on his blog for his company, Essential Oils University. She asked if he could create a spray combining CBD oil and essential oils.

After several different attempts and few “silly” names, Emerson said, the patented spray Vocal Gold, which contains 200 milligrams of full spectrum hemp extract, was born. Emerson was so impressed she asked him to create more formulations for her and in August started the company Dew Drops CBD to share them with the public.

Let Us Pray
A Prayer for Autumn
by Teresa Burns
O God of Creation, you have blessed us with the changing of the seasons.
As we embrace these autumn months,
May the earlier setting of the sun
remind us to take time to rest.
May the crunch of the leaves beneath our feet remind us of the brevity of this earthly life.
May the steam of our breath in the cool air remind us that it is you who give us your breath of life.
May the scurrying of the squirrels and the migration of the birds remind us that you call us to follow your will.
We praise you for your goodness forever and ever.  Amen.
