Gratitude
Thank you for your ministry.
|
|
In the month of February we give thanks for the music-makers of St. Luke Church. Our minds first go to our Director of Music, Jack Barben. Jack is a masterful musician. What's more, he is the kind of musician that believes music is our birthright, that we are naturally given to it (even though you may think or have been told it isn't so), and he is eager to help people discover this innate gift. Much of music education has told a different story-that music-making is a rarefied talent. We are a church for all people, and all are invited and encouraged into the music-making at St. Luke Church.
We give thanks for the members of our choir who come an hour early on Sunday mornings to get a headstart on our hymns & service music in order to help lead our music-making. On occasion, they sing anthems and other solo pieces.
We give thanks for the variety of instrumentalists of our parish who offer their skills. And we honor the children of our parish, many of whom are working with Jack on Saturdays and monthly Sunday rehearsals to create live performances and to augment our congregational singing.
And mostly, we give thanks to all who are willing to bring voice, percussion, tapping toes, and their appreciation to the our common praise, making music together.

Church Chairs and Parish Decision-Making
|
|
Today, at 9 a.m. and noon
St. Luke Church has the opportunity to replace its pews with church chairs, raising the question of whether this is a good move for our congregation. Posing any such option means parishioners will have a range of thoughts and feelings on the matter. Parishioners' personal preferences are certainly a consideration. How pews or chairs function-and which will function best-for the whole and for our ministry is another consideration. The way we will arrive at the best understanding of those questions is to speak and listen to one another in community. The ultimate decision will not be based upon votes cast, but by discernment of the good way by parish leadership. The way we may all participate in that discernment is to attend a chair conversation after the Sunday liturgy. A chair conversation was held last Sunday among eight participants, and conversations will continue this Sunday after both the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. liturgies (at 9 a.m. and noon). There is a display of chairs in the Guild Hall along with a rationale for this option. Note that the red chair is one of the offered chairs in its current state, the hastily recovered chair allows you to see the chair in a more neutral color. Were we to opt for the chairs, they would be recovered and refurbished considering the church's aesthetic and liturgical function.

Safeguarding God's People | St. John's, Snohomish | February 25 at 12:30 p.m.
The Diocese of Olympia takes its responsibility for the safety of our people seriously. The Safe Church program teaches how to identify and prevent abuse within the church community, and is conducted several times per year, free of charge. The training consists of three sessions: Safeguarding God's Children, Safeguarding God's People and a new Anti-Racism program. All clergy members, diocesan team members, and people in leadership (Vestry and Bishop Committee Members), all people who work directly with children, all Eucharistic Visitors and all paid staff in our congregations are required to take the training. Any other interested parishioners are encouraged to participate in training sessions. Certificates are valid for five years and then re-training is required.

Abundance
How can we engage to express our
participation in God's abundance?
|
The vestry designated contributions to St. Luke's Giving Jar for the months of October through January to go to relief efforts in Haiti through Episcopal Relief and Development. Haiti was especially affected by Hurricane Matthew in early October. Together, we raised $154.80. Thank you for your abundant generosity! The Giving Jar for February and March will help fund the Interfaith Conversation series that will take place during Lent.

A Call for Prizes at Shrove Tuesday's Pancake Supper and Bingo
Did you receive a special gift this holiday season that... well... you think someone would else would enjoy more than you? At St. Luke's Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper and Bingo, we bank on re-gifts passed on by parishioners for BINGO prizes. The gifts may be new or barely used items (don't upend your junk drawer) and may be useful or quite ridiculous. Please drop off your items at church to to the parish office as soon as possible so we will know what prizes we may offer at this fun-packed parish event on Tuesday, February 28. As for the particulars of the Shrove Tuesday event itself, stay tuned...

St. Luke's has answered REACH's call for Peanut Butter, Jam, and Honey. This food will be used in the "warm up" breakfast for Renton's marginalized and unsheltered residents. You can leave donated items in the wicker basket in the narthex as you come in the door. We can use as much Peanut Butter, Jam, and Honey as possible. As Kevin said last Sunday-"bring vats of each." This will be an ongoing effort, not a one-time thing.
