CAPA News & Updates
President's Message

On behalf of the CAPA board, I want to wish you a very happy new year of the Rooster.  I'd like to thank the immediate president Dr. Aneesa Rashid for her two-year leadership and contributions to CAPA.  Also, special thanks to past President Ms. Arcie Gemino and board member Ms. Becky Tungol for their six years of dedication to CAPA.

I am pleased to introduce our very passionate, motivated and talented 2017 board. Ms. Sharon Dow, Vice President and Communication Chair; Ms. Ngoc Do, Executive Director; Mr. Jeffrey Vedua, Treasurer; Ms. Yoshi Babcock, Secretary; Mr. Phuong Nguyen, Cultural Chair; Ms. Jieyu Alatchanian, Publicity Chair; Ms. Bing Shuttlewood and Ms. Coco Zhang-Miske, Membership Co-Chairs; Ms. Gongju "Zoe" Baek and Ms. Lavinia Mateo, Community Services C0-Chairs;  Miss Alisa Young and Ricky Young, Youth Co-Chairs; Dr. Aneesa Rashid, Nominations Chair; and Ms. Geck Budd and Mr. Christopher Stefan, new board members.

We are extremely lucky that the following board members will continue their great services on the CAPA board: Ms. Chunchun Tang and Mr. Sarvesh Seshadri- Education Chairs; Ms. Billie Belen, Ms. Eleonor Jenks, Ms. Farah Ahmed, Ms. Harsha Nahata, Ms. Jenny Wang, Ms. Lisa Gray, Ms. Natsuko Sagawa and Mr. Scott Low, Directors.

Our entire board believes in CAPA's mission to unite Asian Pacific Americans and the community at-large through culture, education, and community service. Diversity is CAPA's Strength.  It's truly my honor to be part of this great CAPA family.  I am a firm believer of creating impactful changes through collaboration with organizations with common goals and building leadership platforms for young generations.   CAPA will be the one-stop shop where we can learn and experience different culture, network with people of different backgrounds, and grow the community stronger at large.  Besides continuing CAPA's signature Splendor of the East (SOE) in May, Leadership Summit in October, and  Holiday celebration in December, we will focus on providing more ongoing services such as hosting Simply the Best: Asian Culture &  Education Series in March, June, September and November. CAPA is committed to adding more value and providing better service to the API community at large.

Please check our calendar for all event details and stay tune with our website, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and media communication.  Please mark your calendar on May 13, 2017 for a wonderful Black-tie  Dinner Gala and the Splendor of the East Show and Afterglow to celebrate our family, culture and our community.  What an excellent way to kick-off your Mother's Day celebration!

We are still actively seeking a fundraising chair.  If you are interested in serving our community and making a difference, please consider joining CAPA in one or more of the following roles: a board member, an Advisory board member, a sponsor, a volunteer, or an intern.   Together we can achieve more. We look forward to meeting you in person.

Happy New Year from your CAPA Family!

Best Wishes,
Angela Wang Beasinger

CAPA's Our Stories, Our Voices at University of Michigan SAAN Conference
From Harsha Nahata, CAPA Board of Director

On Saturday, January 21, CAPA 's documentary film project, Our Stories, Our Voices, held an audio visual exhibit at the University of Michigan 's annual South Asian Awareness Network conference. Funded by a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council, this project connects generations through storytelling.

We had over 100 participants come through, from a variety of ethnic backgrounds -Sri Lankan, Singaporean, Indian, Pakistani, Iraqi, Lebanese, and Vietnamese among others. Participants watched clips from the documentary, shared where their family immigrated from, and responded with stories of their own family 's experiences with assimilation and immigration.

We will be incorporating feedback from the students as we continue to put together the documentary. For more information on the progress of the project visit ourstories-ourvoices.com and follow us on Instagram @ourstoriesourvoices.

A Rooster's New Year Resolution
Musings by Dr. Jamie C. Hsu

Now that the celebrations of the holidays are fading away, it is time to build upon all the blessings and best wishes, and start the year of 2017 with an energized self and focused action plan - a new year's resolution.

For many people, their resolutions can be a collection of wishes, determinations, and to-do items. I'd like to offer a more systematic way of doing this based on my 30 years of experience. Let's call it "A Rooster's (me) New Year Resolution." Here are a few pointers for you.

The first step is to envision the type of person you want to be (vision for yourself), and then pick the strategic priorities in your life (remember the Big Rocks in Blog 2?). For each one of the priority areas, think about your broad objectives and let the objectives propel you to take some actions. This way you will link your action items with what is most important to you and with what you want to achieve in life. Another benefit of doing this systematically is to balance your life and your time. Take a look at the total action lists in each category and determine if there are balanced and doable with your time and energy constraints.

Please use this opportunity to share your resolution with your spouse or partner, family, and close friends. They may give you some input and also understand you better.

A sample resolution is shown here and I hope it may trigger some ideas and give you incentive to start your own resolution.

Remember to review your own resolution from time to time. The mere fact of reviewing it will steer you toward your objectives and vision.

At the end of the year, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see how you are becoming the person you want to be. Best Wishes and Congratulations.
