Director's Note
Workplace Safety: A Top Priority

In our industry, safety is a crucial component of quality control, cost reduction and efficiency. But above all, our goal is to ensure that our employees and the communities we serve are protected at all times. Safety should never be compromised for productivity. To quote GEL's Core Values, "w e consider safety and health to be of primary importance."

Maintaining a safe work environment is a topic that should be examined often. As we explore new services, work in new locations, and welcome new employees, safety protocols need to be reviewed and modified regularly. Accidents tend to happen when we least expect it. Interestingly, statistics prove that most traffic accidents occur within 5-10 miles of the victim's home. We encourage our employees to stay alert and be aware of their surroundings at all times, even when it seems as if nothing could possibly go wrong.

Both at work and at home, applying sensible safety measures and having plans in place can potentially save lives. So keep the conversation going, prepare for the unexpected and always look out for yourselves and others.

Have a great summer!

Service Highlight

Property Survey Division (PSD) Surveys
GEL Solutions performs Property Survey Division (PSD) surveys for Departments of Transportation (DOTs.) These surveys are an essential aspect of roadway projects. When these projects require acquisition of property extending beyond the State’s existing rights-of-way (ROW), they must negotiate a settlement with the property owner.

In the event a settlement cannot be reached between the two parties, the case will go to mediation and possibly to court. If either mediation or courts are necessary, a property survey is required to provide the mediator or court with a Condemnation Map. The map serves as an exhibit illustrating boundaries of the private property owned, the existing DOT ROW, and the proposed new boundaries for both.

The map also illustrates the relevant project area, proposed impacts to the property, and pertinent topographic features. This is used to aid in reaching a monetary settlement for the property owner. The GEL Solutions team has performed well over 2,000 PSD surveys to-date.

Lending Assistance After Roadway Collisions

This past spring, GEL Solutions' staff observed multiple dangers on the road. Some were close calls while others were legitimate emergencies. There were three instances where our staff members assisted victims of traffic collisions and we felt all of these responses deserved recognition.

  • On April 3rd, Mindy Tyler was en route to the Raleigh, NC Office when she witnessed a collision (aftermath pictured above.) Several pedestrians converged to aid the driver of one of the vehicles which was overturned. Mindy jumped in to assist the driver of the second vehicle who was also injured until paramedics arrived.

  • On April 8th, J.T. Bunce, Syed Quadri, Brian Meilinger and Jesse Ayscue witnessed another serious car accident near their job site in Lumberton, NC. They climbed a right of way fence to assist the people involved.

  • On April 9th, T.J. Rodriguez and Joe Rogers witnessed a hit and run collision in Charlotte, NC. They immediately pulled over to stop the lane of traffic behind the vehicle that was hit.

We applaud our colleagues for being good stewards of the community and stepping up to assist their fellow citizens in these emergency situations.

Recent "Accidental" Discovery
Could Hold Clues to Ancient Maya
"Archaeologists hunting for a sacred well beneath the ancient Mayan city of  Chichén Itzá  on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula have accidentally discovered a trove of more than 150 ritual objects—untouched for more than a thousand years—in a series of cave chambers that may hold clues to the rise and fall of ancient Maya. The discovery of the cave system, known as Balamku or “Jaguar God,” was announced by Mexico’s  National Institute of Anthropology and History  (INAH) in a press conference held today in Mexico City."
