July 14, 2019: Judging Women for Being Themselves: Applying UU Principles
What generalizations do we tell ourselves about women's ways; how are certain images entrenched in our minds; what risks do we face to confront this; what part do we each play in gender justice? Our UU principles may help us clarify, renew and even change our thinking.
Glynda Christian comes from the Boston area (Winchester & Cambridge) with extensive involvement in the Unitarian effort there. Bachelor's in linguistics and modern languages, teaching certifications in several content areas and levels, Master's Degree in Multicultural Education, Master's Degree in Library and Information Science, and doctoral coursework, ABD. As a curriculum developer, she has written curricula for students from elementary level up through college. As a library director and reference librarian, she loves the printed word. As a lifelong UU, her interest in utilizing and understanding the role of the seven principles in our lives is central.
Juliet Christian-Smith, lifelong UU, was raised on the East Coast and moved to California to pursue a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley. She previously worked for the Union of Concerned Scientists and is now Senior Program Officer for the Water Foundation. Author of several books and recently elected to her local wastewater district board, frequent conference lecturer and occasional assistant in Wee Ones' class. Mommy to Phoebe.

July 21, 2019:
The Spiritual Practice of Giving
What we practice shapes who we are, whether we're conscious of it, or not. And as Barbara Brown Taylor reminds us, "anything can be a spiritual practice" if you're willing to approach in that way. Could giving be a spiritual practice? How do our practices of giving shape who we are as individuals and as a community?
Meg McGuire is a rising third year Masters of Divinity student at Starr King School for the Ministry, where she serves as a student representative to the Starr King Board of Trustees and is one of the 2019-2020 Hilda Mason Teaching Fellows. She is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist, which has long inspired her commitments to social justice work and love of spiritual community. Prior to discerning a call to ministry, she spent five years working as a labor organizer with hotel and restaurant workers in New York City and endeavors to integrate her background in organizing and economic justice work into her ministerial formation. Meg holds an undergraduate degree in Anthropology from Wesleyan University and a certificate in Justice Ministry Education from Auburn Seminary.

Touch of Beauty for the Summer - Update
|
|
Touch of Beauty is EVERYONE's project this summer. Last Sunday, all congregants were invited to bring a flower or 2 to add to the vase. This Sunday, July 14, is Artists' Day. If you have a love of the arts, you're in. The following Sunday, July 21, is "Calling All Athletes" day. So if you love sports, you're eligible to participate. Being a sports fan counts too. (I know there are some avid Warriors fans out there...)
Look for Jean Chan by the front door - she will add your flower to the vase.

Sandy Levitan, one of our newer members of UU, will be offering a theater activity, called Theater On The Go, for the fall of this year.
The North Bay has at least six live theater companies that offer entertainment, education, and enlightenment throughout the year. Sandy will be selecting up to three plays a month, that can be attended together or separately.
Tickets will be purchased by the participants.
Depending on when we see the plays, we can have a discussion afterwards, especially if we have a dinner following a matinee. Or if it's an evening performance, we can meet another day/night at her house or another member's home. Meeting at UU is also a possibility.
Sandy will always be attending all of the plays assigned, but if members can't make it on a particular date, they can always go at their own convenience.
Carpooling is usually an option.
Sandy has been facilitating this activity at the OLLI program at Dominican University for 11 years. Prior to that she had been involved as an actor and director for at least 20 years.
If you'd like to join Sandy, please email her at
sandralevitan@comcast.net
.
Plans will be emailed several weeks ahead.
