Reducing Racism in Rochester

Be a part of the congregational conversation! Following the service on Sunday, February 28th, please join Jon Greenbaum from RocActs, a faith-based project, in the Sanctuary to discuss the Project Implicit Task on Race, developed by Harvard.

A handout with step-by-step instructions is available at church on 2/7 & 2/14. On 2/21, a help desk will be available to assist in completion of the Project Implicit Task.
This important conversation will help us determine future steps as we talk together about how we can help reduce racism in our congregation and community. We hope you'll be able to join us. GATHER THE SPIRIT: Beginning Wednesday, February 17th at 5 PM in the Sanctuary. For five Wednesdays of the Lenten season, Rev. Celie invites you to join her for a midweek moment of renewal and spiritual deepening. All are welcome to drop in on any or all of the gatherings. If you cannot join in person, you may request a weekly e-mail with a poem to incorporate into your personal spiritual practice (send your request to [email protected]).
SOCIAL JUSTICE PLATE COLLECTION: The Social Justice Plate collection for February 21st is Metro Justice. This organization celebrated its 50th anniversary this past year. Our First Universalist SOCIA members and friends work very closely with this organization and are deeply involved. Metro Justice receives no Federal or State funding.
METRO JUSTICE AND "FIGHT FOR $15" UPDATES: Watch for details of the next action for economic justice and fair wages - tentative plans as of press time are a rally in Susan B. Anthony Park at 4:00 pm on her birthday, Monday February 15th. "Failure is Impossible!" Further out, mark your calendars for a bus trip to Albany on Tuesday March 15 for a state-wide action to support a $15 minimum wage in the state budget.
THE BOOK GROUP is pleased to announce that they will be reading The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. The book is now in paperback and the libraries have many copies. The book group will meet at 12 noon on February 28th in the discussion room on the second floor.
