Upcoming Events
Show Some Love!
Our monthly food ingathering will take place next Sunday, February 14th.  Show some love to those in need by bringing a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Community Food Cupboard.  Just a friendly reminder to check expiration dates on donated items.  Thank you!

Meditation Survey

Would you like to meditate on a regular basis with others?  Try it out?  Help us determine interest and plan next steps by completing a meditation group survey by February 15.  Blank surveys and an envelope for completed ones are available on the Religious Education bulletin board in the Clara Barton Lounge.  For more information, contact:  Moritz Wagner [email protected], Kathy Russell [email protected], or Brad Freeman [email protected]

Reducing Racism in Rochester

Be a part of the congregational conversation!  Following the service on Sunday, February 28th, please join Jon Greenbaum from RocActs, a faith-based project, in the Sanctuary to discuss the Project Implicit Task on Race, developed by Harvard.

To be more fully a part of the conversation, complete the task online in advance.  Visit: http://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/

A handout with step-by-step instructions is available at church on 2/7 & 2/14. On 2/21, a help desk will be available to assist in completion of the Project Implicit Task.

This important conversation will help us determine future steps as we talk together about how we can help reduce racism in our congregation and community.  We hope you'll be able to join us. Contact anyone of us with questions and ideas:  Becky Elwell, Kitty Forbush, Elizabeth Osta and Social Justice Chair Eric Van Dusen.

Additional Announcements

GATHER THE SPIRIT:  Beginning Wednesday, February 17th at 5 PM in the Sanctuary.  For five Wednesdays of the Lenten season, Rev. Celie invites you to join her for a midweek moment of renewal and spiritual deepening.  All are welcome to drop in on any or all of the gatherings.  If you cannot join in person, you may request a weekly e-mail with a poem to incorporate into your personal spiritual practice (send your request to [email protected]).

SOCIAL JUSTICE PLATE COLLECTION:  The Social Justice Plate collection for February 21st is Metro Justice.  This organization celebrated its 50th anniversary this past year.  Our First Universalist  SOCIA  members and friends work very closely with this organization and are deeply involved. Metro Justice  receives no Federal or State funding.

METRO JUSTICE AND "FIGHT FOR $15" UPDATES:  Watch for details of the next action for economic justice and fair wages - tentative plans as of press time are a rally in Susan B. Anthony Park at 4:00 pm on her birthday, Monday February 15th.  "Failure is Impossible!"  Further out, mark your calendars for a bus trip to Albany on Tuesday March 15 for a state-wide action to support a $15 minimum wage in the state budget.

THE BOOK GROUP is pleased to announce that they will be reading The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. The book is now in paperback and the libraries have many copies. The book group will meet at 12 noon on February 28th in the discussion room on the second floor.  All are welcome and it is not necessary to have read the book.  See you then!  For questions contact either Shirley Bond at [email protected] or Sarah Singal at [email protected].

OUR OUTLOOK:  First Universalist Church publishes a monthly newsletter, Our Outlook, which is available online or in print.  As attendance and membership has grown at First Universalist, so has the size of our newsletter. We are an involved congregation!  If you would like either the print or online edition, please contact our office admin, Melissa Davies, to let her know your preference ([email protected]; or 546-2826). ~David Damico, editor
