MEET THE 2019-20 WESTRENDS LEADERSHIP
The Westrends Board, which is comprised of one legislator from each of the 13 western states and the Canadian Provinces of Alberta and British Columbia, provides a forum to evaluate the direction and velocity of trends that affect the quality of life in the West. In a region that is increasingly defined by rapid change, the Westrends Board focuses on the implications for policy makers of the demographic, economic and cultural trends that are shaping the western states.  The board will convene next week during the 72nd Annual Meeting for in-person member conversations including topic experts on selected key issues.

Senator Pat Spearman -  The recipient of several degrees including a B.S. in Political Science, Masters of Divinity, and Doctor of Business Administration, Senator Spearman also draws from her military education and experiences in her work . She served in the U.S. Army for more than two decades and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. Her work on policy issues related to energy, sexual assault, human trafficking, and women's equality have earned her several awards. Read Full Bio
 
Senator Randi Becker - A  third-generation Washingtonian, Senator Becker has lived in the area all her life. Her goal in life is to be an honest, respectful and caring person, and considers open and factual communication with her constituents a priority. Growing up in Enumclaw on a dairy farm, she attended Green River Community College and Highline Community College. Prior to taking office, her professional experiences included work as a flight attendant, realtor, and surgical center administrator.   Read Full Bio

U.S. SUPREME COURT CASE UPDATE
The Supreme Court's docket for its 2019-2020 term is only half full but it is already teeming with interesting cases, almost all of which are relevant to state governments. States will be directly affected by the results of two high profile cases: gun safety and the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) case. To help provide a succinct overview, the attached article highlights five cases deemed most significant for state governments.
