President's message:

Dear IISE Construction Division members,

I hope that your academic year is going well. It is my pleasure to have an opportunity to serve the community and update you on the latest activities of the IISE Construction Division.

First, thanks to Ashish Nimbarte for his strong leadership in the past year. The Construction division has had a phenomenal year from 2016 to 2017. We have sponsored a total of 6 sessions at the 2017 IISE Annual Conference & Expo, Pittsburg PA. These 6 sessions are comprised of 12 presentations on a variety of topics, including BIM and Quantitative Methods, Construction Means and Methods, Cost and Schedule, Simulation and Lean Construction, and Smart/Sustainable Construction. The hard work and dedication of Construction track chair, Henry Lester, have made all the above activities possible. Also, Ashish Nimbarte contributed significantly to the successes of student paper competition.

I will work closely with all board members to build continual successes of the IISE Construction division. As you may know, the 2018 IISE Annual Conference & Expo will be held from May 19-22 in the Loews Royal Pacific Resort at Universal Orlando, Florida. We have Gary Moynihan and Henry Lester serve as the Construction track co-chairs.

Last but not least, I would like to thank our board members, Gary Moynihan, Ali Shafaat, Javad Seif, Christina Rinaudo, Henry Lester for their tremendous efforts and dedicated service to our Construction division! With the help of our board members we continue to grow Construction into a prominent professional society in the IISE family. We look forward to your participation in the CIS track of 2018 IISE Annual Conference and Expo. See you all in Orlando FL, May 2018!!

Sincerely,
Mehdi Khazaeli, PhD, P.E.

Message from the Editor

Greetings everyone!

I hope that everyone is having a great start to 2018!

Looking back on the events that occurred in 2017, I am reminded of the importance of industrial engineering in the construction industry and the importance of the IISE Construction Division's mission. The Construction Division strives to share knowledge through promoting lean construction, improving safety and ergonomics, promoting research and innovation, and improving construction competitiveness and stakeholder satisfaction. In 2018, effort and focus to improve or replace aging or damaged infrastructure combined with considerations of fiscal constraints will continue to highlight the need and importance of industrial engineering in this industry.

In line with highlighting technology within construction, I'd like to share a short video of a three-dimensionally printed 512 square-foot concrete structure. This video is of recent research from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers - Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) - Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) in Champaign, Illinois. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjBS6b7ZeF8

Please feel free to send me videos, articles or publications to share with members of the division. I would like to include this shared information in the next iteration of the newsletter.

As I look forward to future IISE activities, I wanted to remind everyone of the IISE Annual Conference at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort in Orlando, FL on May 19 to 22, 2018. The conference provides a venue to meet our peers, learn about research and applications, and learn about opportunities to help within the division. The Construction Division is always looking for volunteers. Please let us know if you are interested in getting involved. I look forward to seeing everyone in Orlando!

Sincerely,

Christina H. Rinaudo

2017 IISE Annual Meeting Summary and best student award announcement

We would like to say a special "thank you" on behalf of the Construction Division of the IISE for yet another outstanding year of operation. In May we had a successful conference track within the Annual Conference. The track included presentations on construction topics, both at the practice level and the research level. The Student Paper that the ConAm Group of Companies sponsored was a highly appreciated part of the Construction Track. We picked two winners from the applicants:

1st place: Javad Seif and Brett A. Shields "Minimizing the cost of Machinery Procurement in Construction Projects under Horizon Uncertainty" (University of Tennessee-Knoxville Space Institute at Tullahoma)

2nd place: Melayne Alexander and Christopher Welch "Integration of GIS and BIM: Erosion Control and Analysis" (University of the Pacific)

The first prize winner was funded with $2,500 to attend the conference and present the paper. We recognized the second place winners with honorable mention and certificates. Unfortunately they weren't able to join us due to financial reasons. The Student Paper award was also recognized in IISE's Honors and Awards Ceremony as being sponsored by the ConAm Group of Companies.
