The Rt. Rev. Megan McClure Traquair
VIII Bishop of the Diocese of Northern California
On the last Saturday in June, a beautiful California day, The Reverend Canon Megan M. Traquair was ordained and consecrated as the Eighth Bishop of the Diocese of Northern California.

Over 1400 Bishops, clergy, civic leaders, family, friends and church members from throughout the diocese gathered to celebrate her consecration.

The Most Reverend Michael B. Curry, Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church, was the chief consecrator, along with five other consecrating bishops, including
The Right Reverend Barry L. Beisner, seventh Bishop of the Diocese of Northern California.

The choir was comprised of members from 17 churches throughout the diocese. The Director of Music was Canon David Link, Canon for Music, Trinity Cathedral, Sacramento. St. Augustine was represented by Amy Quinney, Jim Quinney, Lana Gartin, Sharon Taylor, Theresa Allen and Barbara Sawyer.

Prior to her election as the first female Bishop in the Diocese of Northern California, Bishop Megan was Canon to the Ordinary in the Diocese of Arizona. Her husband Philip was a pediatrician at Phoenix Children's Hospital. They have two children: Hannah, who teaches high school in Tucson, and Benjamin, who is an engineer in Colorado.
The Presiding Bishop and all Bishops present laid their hands upon the head of Bishop Megan and collectively prayed for her ministry.
Bishop Megan greets the congregation.
Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry welcomes our new Bishop.

Walking the Way

In the earliest days of the Church, it wasn’t called Christianity, and it wasn’t seen as a well-established tradition of its own. It was simply called The Way . It was new, formed out of a willingness to embrace change and walk in the way of love. Jesus left his disciples with the wisdom of his teachings and the power of his Spirit to guide them, and their pattern of love and thanksgiving changed the world.

I have two reminders and two requests to make.

I remind you that on her last Sunday with us, we made a formal declaration of the end of our pastoral relationship with Pastor Liz. She is not going to visit us in the hospital, minister at funerals, or weigh in on the business of St. Augustine. Her calling now is to be pastor for another community. It’s hard to say goodbye to such a gifted and faithful leader, and it’s hard to embrace change, but our ministry continues, and it’s going to be okay.

I remind you that I am continuing on for the foreseeable future as the Assistant Rector at St. Augustine. Soon, we will meet our interim, who will guide us in the process of finding our next rector. As I look ahead to the year or so that we will be engaged in this process, I want to acknowledge that it will test our patience as well as our tolerance for uncertainty. In the midst of this, I will strive to be a voice of hope for the possibilities we will discover together on this journey. I am working closely with Kathy Dillon, our Senior Warden, and Sharon, our Parish Administrator, to ensure that our ministries are well-supported.

I ask you to trust and be patient. Everything will happen at the proper time, and please trust the wisdom of the process. Please do not start soliciting clergy to consider applying for the rector position.

Finally, I ask you to pray. As we continue fulfilling our call to serve our community in the love of God; as we renew our mission; as we experience the challenges and feelings this calling brings, let us never cease to pray. Pray for the church as often as you think of it.

Jesus, lead us, as we walk the way.

Tom+
Service Times

8 a.m. Sunday Service
This is a simple communion service without music using Rite II. The quiet service will appeal to some every week and to others occasionally as a quieter way to worship.

10 a.m. Sunday Service
The 10 a.m. service is supported by the St. Augustine Choir. Sunday School begins at 10 a.m., except on some Holy days and special occasions. The FISH Youth Group meets during the school year at 6 p.m. for formation and worship (resumes September 8 th).
Centering Prayer

One of the themes that is emerging in our ongoing practice of Centering Prayer is the awareness that God just wants to spend time with us. In response to the enthusiasm growing around this feeling, our Centering Prayer gatherings are now offered Mondays at 6:30 p.m. and Fridays at noon. The former Tuesday evening gathering has been changed to Monday. We hope that you will join us and see how contemplation can enrich your own experience.
Farewell to Pastor Liz
At the close of her farewell service June 16 th, Pastor Liz Armstrong ended her time with our parish with these words, “After prayer and careful consideration, I have discerned that I should leave this charge, and I publicly state that my tenure as rector of St. Augustine Church ends this day…”

And so we said good-bye and celebrated her seven and a half years at St. Augustine. Liz came to St. Augustine at an exciting time, and, with her sensitive spiritual guidance and delightful sense of humor, she has helped St. Augustine achieve amazing accomplishments.

When Liz joined us, we were still a mission, meeting in the multipurpose room of the Maria Montessori Charter School, our fifth location. After 22 years of searching, and, thanks to Liz’s leadership, we are in our own beautiful First Church, our permanent home, and we have gained full parish standing.

Liz brought new energy and enthusiasm to the St. Augustine community. She supported and encouraged lay leadership with the creation of the leadership team and all the Church ministries. Outreach has been greatly expanded, both locally and internationally. Her close connection with the diocese helped navigate the loans and grants necessary in order to build the Church.

Her lively and thought-provoking sermons re-enforced our focus on what is really important in our lives. Pastor Liz guided us through all of life’s journeys and created space for spiritual growth in each of us. Her special messages will always ring true:
  • Keep breathing!
  • God will always love us, no matter what!
  • You are enough!

We give thanks and express our deep gratitude for Liz’s strong support and leadership over the years and wish her well in the future.

By Barbara Woolman & Kathleen Quigley
Senior Warden Kathy Dillon, presented Pastor Liz with a financial gift purse for her use.
Liz also received a beautiful image of the cross tower photographed and printed by Fred Buhler.
The frame, fashioned by Rich Wampler, is made of old growth redwood re-purposed from pews donated to the mission while at the Anthony Court location. Part of the back of the frame still bears the original finish and screw holes to bear witness to its humble origins.
 We Celebrate Bishop Barry

"We have done true and holy work together. It has been an incredible privilege and joy to be partners together with Christ in His ministry here," writes Bishop Barry Beisner in his farewell letter to the diocese. His retirement became official at the consecration of Bishop Megan June 30 th.

Bishop Beisner's final parish visitation was to Emmanuel, Grass Valley, June 9 th, accompanied by then Bishop-Elect Megan Traquair.

Farewell events were held at St. John's, Petaluma, Trinity Cathredral, Sacracmento, and All Saints, Redding. Bishop Barry and his wife, The Rev. Dr. Ann Hallisey, were gifted with a Rhine River cruise scheduled for next summer.

Bishop Beisner has served us well. He has been a strong supporter of St. Augustine. He actively participated in the beginning conversations with the Building Transition Committee and encouraged our congregation to move forward in the building project. He supported our efforts to become a Parish and to attain financial independence.

Bishop Barry has visited our congregation for several very special events. He came to St. Augustine while we were in our fifth home (Maria Montessori Charter School) in 2010; celebrated with us when we became a Parish in 2012; and in February 2013, Bishop Barry presided at the groundbreaking for our First Church and the installation of Pastor Liz as our rector.

He presided over confirmations and the ordination to the priesthood of our own Fr. Tom Gartin (October 2018). It was great fun to see Bishop Barry in a red party hat participating in a Rise Against Hunger food-packing event during the 2016 Diocesan Convention.

Bishop Barry also dedicated our First Church in February of 2014 and helped us celebrate our 25 th Anniversary November 2017. The St. Augustine congregation is grateful for his love and support. We wish Bishop Barry the very best in his retirement.

A Very Special Quilt
Fr. Tom presented Bishop Barry with a 90-inch square quilt made by Barbara Jean Harlowe. The squares represent the 69 churches in the diocese. The cathedral is in the middle.

Barbara calls the 70 th square on the back "heaven" or God's home.

Adult Formation Classes

Episcopal 101

Join us every third Sunday for a quick discussion of all things Episcopal. We meet in the Sunday School room after the 10 a.m. service. Do you have questions about the liturgy, our tradition or why we do things a certain way? Our next meeting will be Sunday, July 21 st . The classes are led by Fr. Tom.
The Wisdom Literature

What does it mean to live righteously? Does it matter how we live? Why do bad things happen to good people? Join us for a three-week exploration of the wisdom literature of the Hebrew scriptures and the many questions it raises. Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Sign up at the Welcome Center if you would like to see a daytime option. July 10 th , 17 th , and 24 th . The meeting on July 10 th will be at the home of John and Kathleen Quigley, 1755 Maple Grove Lane, Lincoln.
Hosting Coffee Hour is Easy!

All of us enjoy Coffee Hour after church. However, we need more volunteers to sign up to provide snacks. It is easy! Find a partner to share the experience. Keep it simple.

Although occasionally those who host provide a generous offering, that is NOT the expectation. Snacks can be simple finger foods such as: cookies, crackers, cheese, chips, veggies, fruit . . . you get it. You will need about 100 pieces.

TIP: Check out the big box stores for large packages.

Come early to set up, stay late to clean up. You do not have to worry about coffee and tea as those are provided by the Hospitality Coffee person. Look for the sign-up sheet at the Welcome Center. Thank you for volunteering. If you have questions, please contact Camille Grabowski at:

camillegrabowski@gmail.com
Welcome Workshop

Are you a greeter, welcomer or usher? Please join us for a special workshop to help us get coordinated on our welcome plan. We will have this workshop on two dates, so you can pick either one to attend. Sunday, July 14 th , after the 10 a.m. service, or Saturday, July 27 th , at 10 a.m. Thank you for all you do to make St. Augustine a welcoming place!
The Gathering Inn Hosting Program
On the second Wednesday of each month, St. Augustine hosts 70-plus homeless men, women and children, guests of The Gathering Inn, for a hot meal and a safe place to sleep. The next hosting event is Wednesday, July 10 th.

The menu includes Jack Dillon's special barrel chicken, green salad, rice with chopped vegetables, rolls and homemade desserts. Volunteers begin working Wednesday afternoon to set up Canterbury Hall and the sanctuary and to prep the meal items.

After dinner, the guests watch a movie in the sanctuary. Families with children usually sleep in the Nursery or Sunday School rooms. Single men sleep in the sanctuary, while single women sleep in Canterbury Hall. Mats are provided by The Gathering Inn staff. The guests watch a movie in the sanctuary before they settle down for the night.

By 6 p.m., everything is ready for the guests who arrive by bus or van. They drop their bags and duffels in the Sunday School rooms and take a seat. After grace is said, guests line up to get their food which is dished out buffet-style by Church volunteers.

Guests are assigned tasks by The Gathering Inn monitors who accompany them. In the morning, guests serve themselves a granola bar and coffee and juice for the children. They clean the kitchen, sweep the floors, scrub the toilets and reset the sanctuary.

Around 5:30 a.m., a St. Augustine volunteer comes to check our facility and lock up. Everyone is gone by 6:30 a.m., and our Church is back to normal. You’d never even know anyone had been there!

What a fabulous outreach ministry. Over 30 Church members volunteer throughout the year to help with the work involved in serving our Gathering Inn guests. Volunteers are needed each second Wednesday of the month for meal preparation, set-up, serving and clean-up. Sign up at the Welcome Center to help with this ministry. The next hosting event is Wednesday, July 10 th . This is an amazing way to serve.

Rick and Janice Stenzel are in charge of this ministry. If you have questions, please contact Rick at rstenzel195658@yahoo.com or Janice at jstenzel195658@yahoo.com.
The Gathering Inn Donations
The Gathering Inn has a great need for underwear: both men's and women's. We are also in need of socks and High Energy detergent. Clothes for warmer weather are also needed.

Please place your donations in the grocery cart at the entry to Canterbury Hall. Every item is greatly appreciated. Beth Sulc will deliver the items to The Gathering Inn. If you are interested in helping to deliver donations, please contact Beth at:

Thank you for your generosity!
Outreach Ministry

I n the spirit of our Church tradition, the mission of Outreach Ministry is to love others as God loves us. We do this by serving those in need and inviting others into transformational experiences of serving others.

Some of the organizations we serve include:
  • The Gathering Inn Hosting Program. Our next meal event will be on July 10th, and a sign-up sheet for volunteers is located in the Welcome Center.
  • St. James Grocery Cart Ministry. Donations of food staples for this small pantry in Lincoln can be dropped off in the grocery cart at the entrance to the church. Flour and corn tortillas, pinto beans, canned chicken and tuna, rice, cereal, fruit and peanut butter are especially appreciated.
  • Rise Against Hunger. 178 people raised over $8000 and packed over 20,000 meals for struggling families. We will be hosting it again. Watch for the new date!
  • Seniors First. Daughters of the King members packed 48 Care Kits adding notes of good wishes for local seniors.
  • St. Luc Episcopal in Haiti, Acres of Hope and Kairos have also received funds from the Outreach Ministry. All funds come from generous donations of our parishioners and from our annual fundraiser.
St. James Food Pantry Ministry

St James Food Pantry is actually busier than ever with school being out for the summer. In addition to the wonderful support you have given with rice, raw pinto beans, tortillas, canned chicken/tuna and cereal, healthy fruit cup snacks or drinks with moderate sugar would be very helpful. Other items are appreciated as well

Thank you to all who have generously donated food to support the pantry. The pantry in Lincoln is low in supplies. They are distributing a good bit of food every week. The need is not diminishing, and they appear to have expanded their outreach into the community.

St. James is grateful, and we are responding with the specific items of food requested. Your continued support is appreciated and important. Food scarcity is a very real situation and is 24/7.

Please make sure your items are not past the expiration date and are unopened.

The grocery cart is located at the entrance to Canterbury Hall. Thank you for your donations.

Approximately two to three hours of standing are involved. All food is provided, and no cooking experience is needed.

Volunteers include Jack Dillon, John Redmond, Rob and Deidre Shonk, Catherine Beckman, Jim and Stephanie Tilton, Jim and Carla Dolislager, Rick and Janice Stenzel, Lyn Fuson, Steve Broce, Linda Peterson and Kathryn Jordan.

Natalie Cooper and Kara Diaz are doing a great job as the Lead Teachers alternating each week. However, we still need assistant teachers, as we currently have just a few available for this role. Please contact Fr. Tom, Kara or Natalie if you would like to be a part of the children's program.

The responsibility of the assistant is: Arrive a few minutes early to help with any last-minute set-up; assist with activities and/or reading; encourage participation of the children; watch for the Nicene Creed in the sanctuary to let the lead teacher know there are eight minutes left of class; be sure the attendance sheets are accurate where the children sign in, and assist in cleaning up the classroom afterwards. We also hope at some point, if an assistant is interested, that they will consider being a lead teacher when needed.

News from the Nursery

Watch for Changes in the Nursery!

As mentioned last month, Melissa Lovin will continue as Nursery Coordinator until a new Children's Ministry Coordinator is hired. Our current Nursery Assistant, Emma Andres, will leave for UCLA next month. Two new young women have been hired.

Please welcome Jordan Craft and Siena Giampaoli. Jordan will be a junior at Whitney High School this fall. She is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America Club and the Varsity Track Team as a discus and shot put player. Jordan has been active in pageants the last few years and was awarded Miss Teen Lincoln in 2019.

Siena will be a senior in the fall at Rocklin High School, where she is very active. She is currently on the Rocklin High Dance Team, volunteers for the kids camp the dance team hosts each year and is an active member of St. Peter and Paul Church in Rocklin.

Our Nursery is a very active place, which is awesome. Please know that you are welcome to bring your child back into the nursery after communion if you choose. Please let our Nursery Assistants know if you plan to do this so they are prepared. Our attendants do take turns for communion, but there is always someone in the Nursery.

Please contact Melissa or Fr. Tom if you have questions:

Prayer Shawl
Ministry
The modern day prayer shawl ministry is celebrating 21 years in 2019.

"Shawls...made for centuries, universal and embracing, are symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify. Those who have received these shawls have been uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to fly above their troubles..." ( Written in 1998 by Janet Severi Bristow. Copyright 2019)

The shawls pictured below have been lovingly knitted or crocheted by the dedicated members of the St. Augustine Prayer Shawl Ministry. They were blessed at the July 9 th service by Pastor Liz.

Some of the ministry members choose to do all of their knitting/crocheting at home, and some enjoy coming to our monthly meetings on the second Monday of the month at 1:30 p.m. at Church.

Please contact Greer if you are interested in joining the ministry:

Companion's Corner
Ignatius (the Spanish priest and theologian), standing on the banks of the River Cardoner, had a mystical musical experience that allowed him to understand the Holy Trinity. You can get a taste of his experience on the piano keyboard.

First, depress the key middle C, and listen to its solitary sound; this is the sound of the Creator. Let go of the C and now press the E key, two keys above the C, and listen to its solitary sound; it is the sound of the Redeemer. Let go of the E note and press the G key, two keys above the E, and listen to its solitary sound; this is the sound of the Holy Spirit.

Now, press all three keys, C, E, and G, simultaneously and listen to the sound of the musical chord. It is the sound of the Trinity. It is a more complex sound than the sound of any individual note. While its sound is different from any of the single note sounds, it contains all of them. The Holy Trinity always acts as a chord. The three persons are always in consonance.

Listen for the music!
