Executive Orders Wreak Havoc
In April of this year, Trump signed two executive orders that grease the wheels for oil and gas pipeline projects--and we’re seeing the consequences of that action as the administration pushes forward on projects that are hazardous to our global health.
Aside from the huge impact on Co2 levels and global warming, streamlining energy extraction infrastructure projects increases the exposure of environmental risks across the country, specifically to tribal communities and our wild public lands.
A One-Two Punch
One order is specific to the Keystone XL pipeline (a pet project of Trump’s), which hands over the decision to allow infrastructure crossing international borders to be made by the President rather than the State Department. The executive order, combined with backhanded maneuvering by the Trump administration has steadily moved this project forward.
The other order makes it more difficult for states to block pipelines and other energy projects where there are environmental and health concerns.
Tell your members of Congress these executive orders must be overturned.
Congress has the power to overturn an executive order. While the president may veto such a decision, Congress may override the veto with a two-thirds majority.

- The construction of oil and gas infrastructure destroys habitat and fragments wildlife corridors.
- It’s not a matter of if, but when a spill occurs. In 2017, 210,000 gallons of oil leaked from the existing pipeline and a few days later they approved XL pipeline to continue through Nebraska.
- Expanding energy extraction generates more greenhouse gas emissions, more pipelines, faster extraction rates, and a higher/faster warming ratio.
