The Campus as City Report
Today a college performs many of the functions of a local municipality, like planning, housing, transportation, public safety, and health care. Leaders must coordinate a complex network of services, with constrained resources and heightened expectations. Even the essential activities are getting more complicated. And while many campuses act as little cities unto themselves, they also need to be more connected to their surrounding communities, to provide support and to attract and engage students. This Chronicle report examines the tensions and challenges of running a city within a city. With greater financial pressures, they can't operate in isolation anymore. In Boston, a Housing Innovation that Connects the Generations
Although cities across the country are struggling with a shortage of housing, especially at a manageable cost, there are millions of bedrooms going unused. Now, technology is enabling homeowners with rooms to spare to connect with renters who can't afford their own place. Stephanie Leydon from PBS station WGBH reports on how Boston has become a launching pad for the website Nesterly, designed to connect two generations with compatible needs: older people who want to stay in their homes, but need help. The home-sharing idea came to Noelle Marcus while she was living in Boston. We have had over 6,000 people reach out to us from 280 different cities around the world tell us they want us to expand to their city. PBS
United Kingdom Town-Gown Association Call for Bids to Host the 2020 Conference
The United Kingdom Town-Gown Association (UKTGA) invites its colleagues to nominate their institution/town to host their 2020 conference. The purpose is to showcase the town- gown partnerships that exist across the UK and to encourage those involved in town-gown relations in a professional capacity to engage with the work of the UKTGA. The UKTGA conferences are the primary gathering of officers and practitioners from across the UK and beyond, and are a critical function of the organisation. The application to host the conference must be submitted by Friday, 30th of August. Contact Poppy Humphrey for more information.
UK Colleague Talks on Housing, ITGA Power
ITGA Board member Cooper Healey, manager of Manchester (UK) Student Homes, guested on Tuesday's " All Things Equal" radio show produced by Cornell University staff member and ITGA Board member Gary Stewart. Cooper talked about her job, as well as ideas picked up as previous ITGA conferences, such as an outduction program (with the idea that you turn induction on its head) and citizenship education. ITGA board members Ron Jackson, Steve Patterson and Lisa Dvorak will be guesting on "All Things Equal" in the coming months. Gary Steward, Cornell University
4-Way Collaboration in Colorado Springs
An unusual collaboration between colleges has grown into a successful student-led consulting firm where students from four highly distinct institutions work to solve local problems. The four participating institutions are located in and near Colorado Springs, Colo.: the private Colorado College, Pike's Peak Community College, the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and the United States Air Force Academy. The leaders of these institutions form the governing board of the Quad Innovation Partnership. "One of our goals is to be a go-to resource for the community," said Jake Eichengreen, executive director. "Our job is to field those inquiries and build teams of students, faculty or whatever resources are available at our partner's schools." Inside Higher Ed
Berman Meeting to Air Bill on Homeless Students
Los Altos Hills residents curious about the effects of a proposed bill that would allow homeless college students to sleep overnight on campus have an opportunity next week to interface with the bill's lead author, State Assemblyman Marc Berman. If the "Safe Lot Bill" becomes a law, it would require community colleges like Foothill and De Anza to grant overnight access to campus parking lots so that enrolled students in good standing may sleep in their vehicles. A report from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office and The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice states that 19% of 40,000 California community college students surveyed from 57 schools reported experiencing homelessness in the past year.
