Dear Friend of Manna,

....and we are off! One glance at the Manna Food Center calendar for the month of October, and you can tell it is the fall season. Our Smart Sacks program is in full swing at 57 schools, including our in-school pantry at Harmony Hills Elementary, where more than 80% of students are low-income. Food drives have begun in earnest, as we stock our shelves for the holidays. For the first time we are also celebrating Community Food Rescue Week, raising awareness about hunger while offering hands-on activities to help #FeedMoreWasteLess.

Today in particular marks World Food Day, when the global community focuses attention on the goal of Zero Hunger by 2030. We at Manna believe we have an important role to play in making that goal a reality. Our vision is a county where all people at all times have access to good food in welcoming spaces. We want Zero Hunger because food is a human necessity. We also believe that if all our neighbors are well-nourished, they'll be better able to contribute to creating a community where we all live in dignity.

Surrounding all Manna's activities is the reality that this is election season. This month I hosted a candidates' tour of Manna's warehouse, hoping to inform those who seek to represent us about the realities of food insecurity. I've met a lot of candidates recently, and I am grateful for the willingness of people from across the county and all parties to step up to serve.

From the Board of Education to U.S. Senate, candidates will be chosen here in Maryland and across the nation on November 6. Early voting begins next week from October 25th to November 1st. If you are eligible to vote, please make plans to do so. For more information go to 777vote.org.

I appreciate that you support Manna by donating food or funds and by volunteering. Please continue your civic duty by helping shape the leadership of our county, our state, and our country. To reach Zero Hunger our society will need to do more than share food, we'll need political will, which begins with voter participation.

Thanks for all you do,

Imagine a county where no child, family, or senior goes hungry? Together we can make Montgomery County hunger free through financial support during the holiday season.

If you're interested in hosting an online fundraiser via Facebook, please contact Michelle at [email protected]. We will give you all you need to run an impactful fundraiser online for Manna.

Kids Helping Kids Food Drive
Now until October 31st

Support the Kids Helping Kids anti-hunger campaign by donating at a participating school from now until October 31st. Kids Helping Kids mobilizes students in Montgomery County schools to raise food and funds for their hungry peers across the county. Participation in this food drive teaches children valuable lessons about hunger, engages them in giving, and shows them that they have the power to make a difference in their community.

Check out Manna's Most Needed Food Items list for important items to collect for the drive. If your kid's school is not participating, you can drop off donations at Manna Food Center's warehouse, 9311 Gaither Rd., Gaithersburg, MD.

*Please note, registration for Kids Helping Kids must be completed by a school Teacher or Administrator. Visit mannafood.org/khk for more information.
