Women's Book Study |
The women's study group meets Thursdays at 1:00 pm in the Parish Hall. They are currently reading,
Leaving Church: A Memoir of Faith, by Barbara Brown Taylor. The book is
"...a beautifully crafted memoir . . . . There is a refreshing honesty . . . a slice of courage in a world that too often refuses to admit its vulnerability. . . . Leaving Church does not bash the church. It is a love story about letting go and learning to live with the mystery of what may happen next." -

Icon Writing Workshop - August 26-30 |
The fourth annual icon writing workshop will be held August 26-30
in the Christ Church parish hall. The instructor this year is Kara Nelson. Icon writing is much more than learning to paint an icon, a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making icons more a form of prayer than art and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. The group will work from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, but you may work more or less as your eyes, body and soul are so inclined. Each day will begin with a brief worship and Eucharist filled with instruction about icons. The cost is $375. No previous experience is needed and all materials will be furnished. Just bring a lunch and a willingness to learn. Contact: Mtr. Becky at
[email protected]

Youth Summer Outreach Camp |
This summer, our youth will have the opportunity to give back to the community with Serving Our Neighbors, a week-long outreach camp, from July 15-19. All youth from rising 5th graders through high school-aged youth are welcome. This is an all day, week-long camp that focuses on outreach in our community.
Because the group will be taking our lunches with us during the day, we would like to borrow a couple two coolers to keep them from spoiling in the heat and one drink cooler with a spigot for cold water. If you've got coolers or a drink cooler you can lend, please contact Mtr. Katie at [email protected].
|
Acolyte Festival - August 24, 2019 |

Tour of Homes 2020 Is Ramping Up! |
|
Many hands make light the work...
As the planning begins for the March 21, 2020 Tour of Homes, there are openings for committee chairpersons. We are looking for men and women to share their talents in the following areas: benefactors, marketing, tour buses, ToH kick-off party, celebration party assistant, and signage. We're happy that so many folks have already stepped up to chair various committees and look forward to filling the rest of these vital positions with more talented volunteers!
If you'd like to help with this most worthwhile project, please contact the chairs, Susie Henning and Tami Black.

Holy Land Trip |
|
In late May, an intrepid group of travelers from the Golden Isles, including a contingent from Christ Church, ventured forth on a special interfaith trip to the Holy Lands. The tour, entitled, The
Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony by Mejdi Tours, was organized by the Rev. Alan Dyer of Saint Simons Presbyterian Church, Rabbi Rachael Bregman of Temple Beth Tefilloh and the Rev. Tom Purdy of Christ Church Frederica. Participants have described the journey as both thought-provoking and transforming. Read more about the trip in this excellent
article written by one of the participants, Bethany Leggett, for the Brunswick News.

Mother Becky Visits Germany |
Mother Becky and her husband, Uli Keller, were finally able to get away for a highly-anticipated trip to Europe in June. There they spent time in Germany, visiting with Uli's family and taking in the sights in Heidelberg and Berlin. Mother Becky was thrilled to visit so many beautiful churches and cathedrals, but misses her church family at Christ Church!

Historical Find Made with Help from Christ Church Documents |
|
St. Simons Island is notable for its historic ruins, from the middens created by Native Americans 3,000 to 4,200 years ago, to the archeological remnants of early 18th century Ft. Frederica and the more recent remains of tabby antebellum structures. There are also thousands of graves of the generations of people who inhabited the island - some well marked and others, obscured by time.
Fort Frederica's Michael Seibert has been researching a burial site at the fort since 2015 and recently released information about the archeological excavation work done there that supports the theory that this was the burial site of Thomas Abbott, father or Robert S. Abbott, who went on to publish the Chicago Defender daily newspaper and become one of America's first black millionaires.
Helping him make this discovery was documentation found in the Christ Church archives by parishioner Cindy Rackley. Read more about this exciting discovery in a recent Brunswick News story
