Legislative Update

We are four weeks into the legislative session and it seems to be busier than ever. With Republicans having control of both the House and the Senate, as well as having the governor's office, bills that have never seen the light of day are not only being introduced, but also are moving through the process.

From the perspective of MBI, there a number of good bills, average bills and even a couple of bad ones. To read our quick rundown of some of the bills that MBI's lobbying team is tracking so far this session, CLICK HERE.

Should you have any questions on these or other bills under consideration at the Iowa Capitol, please feel contact Chad Kleppe at [email protected].

Beyond the Building

The process of completing any construction project has many facets including design, bid, construction, change orders, scheduling, and more. No construction company can complete a project without putting all of these pieces in place in the proper sequence...these are the facts of the bricks and mortar portion of the construction industry.

The ultimate contribution that can be made by any construction company happens "Beyond the Building!" The families that are supported through the business, the way the business and its people impact the community, the dreams that the company helps build by seeing value in the people they hire, and the way they conduct themselves as leaders. Whether we are talking buildings or people, bringing a concept into its physical form is pretty awesome to witness, but the true success is the growth "Beyond the Building!"

Pamela Mumm, a founding member of the John Maxwell training team, is a nationally recognized Teacher, Speaker and Coach who earned her undergraduate degree from Wartburg College and her Master's Degree from the University of Iowa. As an Executive Coach for C-Suite Professionals and their Executive Directors, she is the silent power behind teams of leaders growing, developing, and achieving extraordinary results. As a "Spedutator" (Speaker, Educator, Facilitator) Ms. Mumm speaks on a number of subjects including: Overcoming Drama, Power Communication, Purpose, Vision, Goals; Attitude; Terror Barriers; Perception and other topics all designed to help people discover, transform and achieve their greatest desires. Her greatest reward is accomplishing extraordinary results through hard work and laughter.

Called to Coach: Reflections of Life, Faith and Football

Bobby Bowden is known as much for his affable charm as he is for his championship teams. The legendary college football coach guided Florida State University to more than three hundred victories, two national championships, and twelve Atlantic Coast Conference titles, finishing in the top five in the country in 14 straight seasons, and led the Seminoles to Bowl Games in 28 consecutive seasons during his 34-year tenure. The patriarch of college football's most famous coaching family, Bowden remains heavily involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, annually awarding The National Bobby Bowden Award to a student-athlete for achievement on and off the field, including his conduct as a faith model in the community. Bowden was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. He coached his last game on January 1st, 2010 in the Gator Bowl, in which he led his team to one final victory under his reign. On March 21, 2009, the first Annual Bobby Bowden National Collegiate Coach of the Year Award was established.

In 2014, Bowden released his third book titled "The Wisdom of Faith." No matter your life circumstance, "The Wisdom of Faith" shows you what really matters - from the perspective of a man who has made the journey. His earlier books, "The Bowden Way" and "Called to Coach" were both best-sellers.

Full of Heart: My Story of Survival, Strength and Spirit

J.R. Martinez is an actor, bestselling author, motivational speaker, advocate, and wounded U.S. Army veteran. He is many things. But perhaps most significantly, he is an inspiration.

J.R.'s career path has been incredible, and perhaps even a bit improbable. Once a high school football player from a small town in Georgia, the only son of a single working mother who emigrated from El Salvador, J.R.'s trajectory is nothing if not surprising. Even to him. After high school, he joined the army. J.R. was proud to serve, as a way to give something back to a country that had already given so much to him and to his family. In January of 2003, he was assigned to the 2 nd Battalion, 502 nd Infantry Regiment of the 101 st Airborne Division.

In March of 2003, J.R. was deployed to Iraq. On April 5 th , he was driving a Humvee in Karbala when his left front tire hit a roadside bomb. The three other soldiers were ejected from the burning vehicle, but J.R. was trapped inside. He suffered smoke inhalation and severe burns to 34% of his body. J.R. claims that while he was fighting for his life and awaiting medical help, his sister, Anabel, appeared to him giving him the strength to live. Many also know J.R. as "Brot Monroe," a combat veteran who was injured in Iraq and returned home to face the new challenges of reintegrating to civilian life, on the Emmy Award-winning daytime drama, All My Children. After All My Children ran its final season, J.R. went on to surprise and inspire a nation on ABC's Dancing with the Stars. Along with partner Karina Smirnoff, he won the coveted mirrorball trophy, and they were named Season 13 champions. He was also named one of People's "Most Intriguing People" of 2011. J.R. Martinez is the author of the New York Times bestselling book, "Full of Heart: My Story of Survival, Strength, and Spirit," a memoir about how he was able to take his personal tragedy and turn it into an inspiration for others.
