Principal's Message
February 3, 2017
Dear Families and Friends of OLQP,
Catholic Schools Week is coming to a close. A variety of activities enriched the week for everyone. The students learned "fun facts" about Catholic education in the United States, participated in the "Religion Bowl" to test their knowledge of the Faith, and signed placards as endorsements of the OLQP groups they participate in. Families were celebrated with "Donuts at Drop Off" and "thank you" messages posted on social media. Open House welcomed parents into classrooms to participate in activities and see "students in action." The variety of activities included concept development for "sink" or "float" where students made predictions, tested their predictions, and recorded the results (PreK), constructing and interpreting graphs using candy hearts (1 st), and using prior knowledge of Newton's Laws of Motion and data gathered in experimenting in order to design and build a ramp that will produce the best ride for a small car (5 th). Students in one class experimented with marbles (alveoli) and a cardboard tube (bronchus) to calculate the increase of surface area of the tube (bronchus) in the presence of the alveoli (7 th) while another class was in the computer lab using "Tinkercad" to create a design to be used with the 3D printer (8 th).  Language Arts activities were well-represented, also. Students were engaged creating games to test their reading comprehension (4 th), curating poetry books that included original works by the students (7 th), and reading, writing, and learning about groundhogs and Groundhog Day (K). After reading about the history of tangram puzzles, one class used hands-on activities to explore their geometric properties (2 nd). Students also used data to create a visual representation of mode, median, and mean (6 th).  A social studies review turned into a game that required both knowledge and pitching skill (3 rd). In middle school, students used their favorite musicians as inspiration to write and sing a song about one of the U.S. Constitution's Amendments (8 th). Classroom visits revealed students engaged and enjoying learning together where the unseen guest is always Our Lord, Himself.  That's what it is all about.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,
Mrs. Marianne Mechura, M.Ed.
