On Saturday, February 25, 2017, Downtown Los Angeles' Corey Helford Gallery (CHG) presents New Zealand-based figurative painter Meredith Marsone in her U.S. debut exhibition, entitled "Arbitrary Dreams". On view in CHG's Gallery 3, Marsone's exhibition will feature an exquisite new series of oil on aluminum portraits.

Everything in life begins with connection and in each moment, we are choosing to join or separate, to connect or disconnect. Marsone depicts the essence of connection and how we emotionally identify with each other in her uniquely painted portraits. Often, she juxtaposes realistic details against areas of impasto, paint applied thickly enough that the brush and painting-knife strokes are visible. The figure underneath is fully rendered and the gestural paintwork is applied over the top, revealing an intimate glance, a blush, or the slightest touch of skin between the people portrayed. The purpose of this risky application is to create what she calls "an emotional currency, an access point for connection."

In discussing her new series of painting, Marsone shares: "This body of work centers around the emotional life and the internal workings of the female experience, as I know it to be - the complexities of being highly involved in wounds, at the same time aware of a higher state of awareness that relieves those hurts. It's a very personal exploration, which has been a largely intuitive journey, producing work that involves a high level of vulnerability. As artists, we expose ourselves whenever we create, but to say openly, 'This work is about my internal world, my failings and my realizations,' opens me even further.

"See Me" (oil on aluminum - 300 x 200mm - 12" x 8" framed)

As a parallel to this statement, is my methodology, which is also full of risk and trust. I render my figures lifelike, painstaking work, which requires all of my skill and concentration. Only to be followed by a highly intuitive stage involving bold decisions, holding my breath, risking the work gone before, and a lot of paint! This work is me - openly, lovingly and honestly presented to you, for you, to take what you like from it.
Ultimately, I hope you find connection or understanding, or some kind of recognition that we are all, fundamentally, the same."

The opening reception for "Arbitrary Dreams" will be hosted Saturday, February 25, 2017, from 7-11pm at Corey Helford Gallery. The reception is open to the public, and the exhibition is on view through March 25, 2017.

About Meredith Marsone:
Meredith Marsone is a contemporary artist working in oils. Her subject matter centers around the figure as they move through the myriad of human experiences. Marsone's work is at once accessible and relatable but leaves the audience wondering the deeper context. She purposefully leaves this up to the mind of the viewer encouraging you to create your own narrative and meaning from the figures in their chaotic and emotive environs.

After nine years in Culver City, CHG relocated in December 2015 to a robust 12,000 sq. ft. building in Downtown Los Angeles, seven times larger than its original space, where it continues to host exhibitions within the heart of the city's art community. The current space boasts three separate galleries, each of which house individual artist and group exhibitions, whereas the main gallery offers 4,500 sq. ft., providing total immersion for its attendees.
