Emerging Artist winners headline April 8 concert
Three young musicians, winners of the 2016 SSO Emerging Artist Competition, will be featured in the SSO's concert, "Stories from the Woods," on Saturday, April 8.

Aled and Matisse Blundell

perform Richard Strauss's Horn Concerto No. 1, perhaps the most often performed horn concerto written in the 19th century. Strauss, whose father was a noted horn player, composed the concerto when he was 18.
A brother/sister duo, Aled Blundell, 15,
and Matisse Blundell, 17, Toronto, will play Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets, one of the composer's best-known creations.
Also on the program are Ludwig van Beethoven's Overture to the ballet
The Creatures of Prometheus
and Antonin
Dvořák's Symphony No. 6.
The concert celebrates the importance of children and youth participating in the arts. Dvořák's symphony is a nod to nature and the woods of Eastern Europe, in keeping with the concert's theme, "Stories from the Woods."
The concert will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church in downtown Stratford Saturday, April 8. It begins at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are available at Fanfare Books, Blowes Stationery (downtown) and Lyric Flowers (St. Marys), as well as on the

. Tickets are $40 for adults and $10 for students (with a valid ID). Children 12 and under are admitted free.

Stratford 15-year-old wins
Emerging Artist Competition
Ji Won Baxter, a 15-year-old violinist, has won the 2017 SSO Emerging Artist Competition.
Ji Won is a Grade 9 student at Central Secondary School in Stratford. In the competition she performed Dmitry Kabalevsky's Concerto in D Major. As winner of the competition, she will perform with the SSO in a concert next season.
She came to Stratford from Korea at the age of three and began studying violin when she was four. Her teacher until last fall was Dini Westman, Stratford. Since September, Ji Won has studied with Jerzy Kaplanek, an associate professor at Wilfrid Laurier University.
Ji Won is the daughter of Young Mee Jung and Peter Baxter of Stratford.
This year's competition was limited to string orchestral instruments. Members of the jury were SSO musicians Debbie Wunder and Margaret Metcalfe, and Barbara Steed Young, SSO music director emerita.

Hear Kiwanis Stars at SSO Sunday Brunch May 7
Stars of the 2017 Kiwanis Music Festival (to take place in April) will be featured in the final Sunday Brunch Concert for the current season on May 7 at Revival House in Stratford. The concert begins at 11:30 a.m.
