Monday, February 6 is the last day to register for the Beginning Farmer Retreat.

Where: Ewalu Camp and Retreat Center
37776 Alpha Avenue, Strawberry Point, IA 52076
Start:    1:00 pm Friday, February 10
End:      2:00 pm Saturday, February 11

Cost: $20 for PFI members $40 for non-PFI members
Cost covers retreat activities, food and bunk-style lodging. Alternative lodging is available on your own in Strawberry Point.

The retreat is intended for beginning farmers who are motivated to improve their financial and business knowledge for their existing or future farm. Friday will cover financial literacy and available programs for farm financing. Attendees can choose to create a projected income statement using their own financial records or focus on goal setting for their future farm business. On day two the group will break into enterprises and learn about marketing and production efficiencies.

Here's what some of last year's attendees had to say about this retreat:

"I so appreciated that you had REAL producers as speakers - not just
speakers on the conference circuit!"

"I love getting to hear about what is or isn't working for other beginning farmers."

Opportunities
Big Creek State Park Habitat Management Lease Opportunity
Big Creek State Park is seeking interested bidders for a wildlife management lease on about 213 acres, located southwest of the intersection of 26th and 66th street, Johnston Iowa. This will be a standard habitat management lease with row crop rotation and forage. 21.5 acres will be left as food plots until after March 1 each year.  Fall tillage is not allowed per this lease. Current food plots are property of DNR, and will be harvested according to terms of lease.

Take the National Young Farmer Survey
The National Young Farmer Survey is conducting their young farmer survey now! Through their first national survey in 2011, young farmers and ranchers came together to tell the nation who they were and what they needed in order to succeed. The results from that survey inspired new programs and influenced policies in every state. Now we have the opportunity to speak up again.
