February 15:   Capital High School, with the help of the College of Western Idaho, will sponsor a Hispanic Family Night at Capital from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Dinner and child care will be provided. Families will be provided an opportunity  to learn about FAFSA and the steps needed in going to college.  The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that can be prepared annually by current and prospective college students to determine their eligibility for student financial aid.  Hispanic families from the Boise School District, representing grades 9-1, are being invited. February 22:   Deadline to sign-up for free developmental screening. Call to set up an appointment if you have a child who is from 3-5 years old and who may have possible delays in the following areas:  Speech; Language; Concepts; Motor Skills; Self Help Skills; Social Emotional; Vision and Hearing.  Special Education Services are available for children with developmental delays through the Boise School District's Early Childhood Special Education Program. February 23:   Boise High Choir and Orchestra Concert and Fundraising Event "All You Need Is Love". A night of Music about Love  with Dessert, Silent Auction and More!  6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall (Cathedral of the Rockies) 717 N. 11th Street. Tickets: $10.00 available at the door. Featured performance of Eric Whitacre's Five Hebrew Love Songs at 7:30 pm.

March 14:   On Tuesday, March 14, 2017 Boise School District will hold a bond election to reinvest in our neighborhood schools and community with no increase in the current property tax rate.

The need for this bond election is driven by:

• A Facility Audit that shows growing deferred school maintenance needs (nearly $330 million).
• Aging schools - 52% of Boise's schools were built more than a half-century ago and are facing significant maintenance needs & deficiencies.

The amount of the bond is $172.5 million, which does NOT raise the current property tax rate.

The bond addresses overcrowding,  outdated and aging facilities, and gives students access to modern classrooms and schools that reflect best practices in education and technology - ensuring students graduate college and career ready.

March 15:  Hillside Junior High School Bridge students will host a Cultural Celebration on Wednesday, March 15th from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM in the Hillside Junior High School Gymnasium, 3536 W. Hill Rd. Dinner will be served and the Bridge Students will be performing. 

High School Students Win Prizes in Scholastic Art & Writing Competition: A number of high school students within the Boise School District have won prizes from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. Click here for a complete national list of award recipients, including winning students from Borah, Capital and Timberline highs. Search by school names to see the winning students. Work was judged on the regional level for Honorable Mention, Silver Key, and Gold Key Awards. Gold Key work will advance for consideration in national-level recognition. In 2013, more than 230,000 works of art and writing were submitted. At the regional level, approximately 7 - 10% of the works submitted received Regional Gold Keys, 10-15% received Silver Keys and 15 - 20% received Honorable Mentions.

Timberline Speech & Debate Team & Students Earn Awards at Tournament:  Timberline High School's Speech and Debate Team earned 2nd Place in the Sweepstakes category (the team award) at last weekend's Foley Tournament in Spokane, Washington.  Timberline competed against 30 schools and 15 Timberline students participated in the tournament and every single one of them received a medal (some multiple medals). Hillside Principal Wins Refugee Champion Award:  Mr. Nate Dennis, Principal, Hillside Junior High School, has been selected to receive the 2017 Refugee Champion Award as presented at the refugee conference held at Boise State on Tues., Feb. 7, 2017. 

Principal Dennis was recognized for making Hillside a kind, safe and compassionate place for refugee students and for his dedication to the Bridge program, which helps refugee students succeed in the Boise School District.

"We are proud of Principal Dennis for receiving this much-deserved award," said Stacey Roth, Administrator of the District's English Language Learner program. "It is with Principal Dennis' leadership that refugee students at Hillside are able to flourish and succeed. The entire Hillside community, including staff and students have welcomed our refugee students with open arms and this award serves as recognition of their efforts to create a nurturing school environment, as well. Our refugee students make us all proud and make us all better people."

There were 14 nominations and 4 award winners. The award is given annually to recognize outstanding humanitarian contribution to the refugee resettlement in Idaho.

District Educators Receive Pesky Award for Inspirational Teaching: Two Boise School District educators, Nikki Clark-Vega and Maura Goddard, have been selected to receive The 2016 Pesky Award for Inspirational Teaching .  The Pesky Award for Inspirational Teaching recognizes kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers in Idaho and beyond who make a major difference in the lives of their students through their passion and caring.

Photography Instructor Recognized:  Patricia Thorpe, Photography Teacher, Timberline High School, will have her photos recognized by being on display at an art show currently being held at the Nampa Civic Center, Main Hall, sponsored by Nampa Art Collective.  

Boise School District Career Counselors Launch Twitter Account:   P repare for college and career success by following   Boise District's Career Counselors on their new Twitter Account:  #bsdcollegebound. Learn important information about college application deadlines, scholarship information, college research information, etc.   In addition, log on to the BSD's new College and Career Counseling website here. This new website features valuable information on preparing to go on to college and also includes a site here where you can schedule an appointment to meet with your school counselor.

The website is loaded with nutrition resources to help students, teachers, and families learn about good nutrition and wellness, both at school and at home.
