Today is "80's Day" - please see student pictures below.
During my freshmen year of high school I had a tough time finding my niche. I tried different sports and did okay, but it was not until I discovered track and cross country that I truly excelled. I was fortunate as my success there led to an athletic scholarship to Florida State University. Sometimes high school students just need to explore different clubs, sports, or other organizations until they find out what out they really enjoy (two of our clubs are spotlighted in this issue).

I say it all of the time but it bears repeating - until we, as educators, take an interest in what the students are interested in (extracurriculars, clubs, sports, service), we cannot expect all of them to take an interest in what we expect during periods 1-7.

Thank you for looking over this latest update and enjoy the rest of your week!

With Phoenix Pride,

Mr. Doug Loftus

"TOTAL FOCUS"
This picture was taken one week ago today with math students working on algebra fundamentals. While difficult to see here, the purple poster to the far right reads "Keep Calm and Combine Like Terms" - a reminder of one of algebra's fundamental steps.

Photo Club

Photo Club is just one of the opportunities open to our Phoenix students this school year. Photo Club has already been meeting and has been enjoying the experience!

Graduation Checklist / Testing Dates
All Class of 2020 students received a personal planner this year. Shown below are two important pages from the planner that all of our seniors should be aware of.

Staff Recognition
Tish Atehortua, Bookkeeper

Pictured with Principal Loftus, Ms. Atehortua was given a perfect score on the high school's annual audit. This is not the first time for Ms. Atehortua as she is extremely competent at what she does and enjoys her work ... she is a real asset to Acceleration East High School!

NEW!!!
Pet Rescue Club
Acceleration East has a new club this year - Pet Rescue Club - which Ms. Havner (below at a recent club meeting) has organized. The students are able to earn volunteer hours assisting at community shelters and pet stores caring for animals. Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando is partnering with AEHS by providing hands-on experience and an appreciation for rescuing pets.

Student Health & Safety
Threat assessment training
OCPS principals and support staff have been engaged in threat assessment training. Pictured below, OCPS District Chief Bryan Holmes addresses a group of principals yesterday on exactly how law enforcement can support each school's discipline team.

All of the schools maintain flexible safety plans which can be revised as needed.
Vital Signs
Growth in Americans with 4-year college degrees
Companies are restructuring their compensation and benefits packages to attract these qualified women (as of July 2019 the number of men and women in the workforce with a 4-year undergraduate degree is tied at 29 million).

THE TRUTH ABOUT SUCCESS

To be successful, you don't need to be lucky or rich. But you do need to know this:

* You are what you do daily.
* You first form your habits; then your habits form you.
* It is just as easy to form habits of success as it is to form habits of failure.

Remember Phoenix students - Every day you live, you are in the process of becoming. Whether you are becoming better or worse depends on what you give yourself to.
