Down under

Very few people will see the underside of a table. Cleaning staff, perhaps. AV contractors and installers during the initial set up. Perhaps the designer will duck down and look, and maybe your most curious guests, if we've done our job and the table really wows them.

Mostly, though, you're walking up to the table or sitting at it. You see the top, the edge, maybe a bit of base if you drop your pen. But underneath the tabletop? Not so much.

We can't help but notice, though, that we have been creating some pretty stellar table undersides of late.

Above and to the right are a couple examples shown in various stages of progress in our factory. In case it is hard to tell what you're looking at, the table in the top image is completely finished underneath. The reverse knife edge goes right into a lacquered surface with no gaps or reveals, subtop or frame showing. It's smooth and beautiful all the way to the table base, which has an apron to hide wiring coming from tabletop fixture boxes.

The table at the top of the column on the right we have shown you a few times now, but it doesn't lose its appeal. Here it is in the factory. It almost appears that this table with its slopping, curved veneer underside has more attention paid to its bottom than its top.

And what about that base on the next picture? We showed you this table last month. Did you see the base? It has an interior elliptical base no one will ever see, and yet all the base parts are completely finished and absolutely beautiful.

As we noted, for the average user these features won't ever be noticed. But we couldn't help but take note as we do spend quite a bit of time under, in and around tables.
