FCM Releases 2019 Election Platform
        
FCM has released its 2019 federal election platform, Building Better Lives, which outlines a vision for modernizing the relationship between communities and the federal government.  The platform prioritizes action on infrastructure, public transit, housing, climate action, and rural and northern communities.   Read more   
UBCM, EMBC Partnering on EPA Modernization
        
The Province of British Columbia is working with local governments as part of its effort to modernize the Emergency Program Act (EPA). The current Act is outdated, remaining largely unchanged since it came into effect more than two decades ago. Recent emergency events, such as the unprecedented wildfires and extreme flooding, have underlined the need to adapt and strengthen BC's approach to mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.   Read more   
Structural Flood Mitigation Grant
        
The Community Emergency Preparedness Fund for structural flood mitigation projects has an application deadline of Friday October 25th. The maximum available grant is $750,000.00. The Program & Application Guide and application forms are available. All BC local governments and First Nations (bands and Treaty First Nations) are eligible to apply.     Read more  
Consultation on Accessibility Legislation
       
The provincial government has launched a consultation on proposed accessibility legislation. The proposed BC legislation will support and align with the federal government's passing of Bill C-81, Accessible Canada Act: An Act to Ensure a Barrier-free Canada.  The Bill came into effect in June 2019 and sets accessibility requirements for sectors or organizations under federal jurisdiction.   Read more   
Community Wildfire Resiliency Workshops
        
Local government & First Nations fire officials, community planners, emergency managers, community foresters and land managers, elected officials and chief administrative officers are invited to help shape the future of community wildfire resiliency planning in B.C., at six regional workshops scheduled for late October.     Read more  
Fleet Electrification Application by BC Hydro
        
The British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) is currently reviewing BC Hydro's Fleet Electrification Application, which  seeks approval of new rates for two new services with the goal of encouraging fleet electrification. This application may be of interest to local governments with EV fleets. 
Habitat for Humanity in BC Communities
        
Habitat for Humanity is working with the Province and municipal and First Nations governments across BC to deliver affordable home ownership opportunities for people leaving social housing to pursue homeownership. They will have a trade show booth at Convention.   Read more
