Leadership Opportunities  for
Medical Students and Residents

The MAFP and MAFP Foundation provide opportunities for the future leaders of family medicine to enhance their education, make connections and gain "real world" experience. We are seeking dynamic medical students (4) and residents (4) to serve a one-year term on the Board of Directors for either the MAFP or MAFP Foundation.

Interested students and residents should complete a Board of Directors Application  and review Campaign Rule Information. The Board of Directors Application and additional required documents must be received via mail, fax or email no later than Monday, March 20, 2017.

Elections for these board members will occur at Spring Fling Conference on Saturday, April 22.
MAFP Membership Retention Rates  Are Up

The AAFP released 2016 year-end membership reports that recap MAFP/AAFP membership benchmark numbers and retention rates.  Your Mississippi Chapter had 80.5% market share in the state. The pool of eligible members is defined as anyone who is a graduate of an ACGME or AOA approved residency program or a former active member who is not residency trained who still remains eligible for membership.  The AAFP had 76.7% market share.
  • The MAFP had a rate of 93.8% of converting resident members into active members, while the AAFP had a 76.4%.
  • The MAFP had a retention rate of 95.1% for new physician members, while AAFP had a 88.6%.
  • The MAFP had a retention rate of 94.9% of active members, while AAFP had 94.4%
Help us reach our goal of at least 85% market share by year end by referring a  potential MAFP member. Please invite him/her to join and your referral will earn you a $100 coupon toward a future MAFP conference.

Resource for Board Examination

MAFP members recently received a letter promoting Core Content Review. Represent the MAFP at National Meeting

National Conference of Constituency Leaders (NCCL) is a vehicle for member constituencies, recognized as women, minorities, new physicians, international medical graduates, and LGBT physicians, to exchange information, share experiences, and develop basic leadership skills.  If you are interested in becoming a chapter delegate, simply email your CV and area of interest to Claire Rome at claire@msafp.org.

Chapter delegates are official representatives from each constituency representing each chapter. All active members who meet the definition of the constituency group they will represent are eligible to serve as a chapter delegate. Chapter delegates are eligible to serve on and testify in all reference committees, vote on resolutions in the business session, and vote in the elections.

If you are interested in being more involved in the MAFP and AAFP, being a delegate to the NCCL is the perfect opportunity for you.

Medicaid Provider Revalidation
Medicaid Provider revalidation begins April 2017. In order to ensure provider access for Medicaid beneficiaries, all providers need to enroll. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires all State Medicaid agencies to revalidate the enrollment of all providers at least every five years. Beginning April 2017, DOM will begin a mail rollout process which will be used to notify providers enrolled in the Mississippi Medicaid Program for five or more years of the revalidation requirement. Revalidation notifications will be issued on a staggered schedule until notices have been issued to all providers due for revalidation. Attached is an article that will be published in Medicaid's March Provider Bulletin about this requirement.

For enrollment questions, contact Provider Enrollment at 1-800-884-3222.
What's All the Buzz About Direct Primary Care?
Don't miss the CME session on Direct Primary Care by Drs. Timothy Alford, John Vanderloo and Micah Walker at the MAFP Spring Conference! Click here for the brochure.

In 2015, the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians worked with members of the legislature and the Governor to ensure the passage of the "Mississippi Direct Primary Care Act." At that time, there were only 7 other states in the nation to provide laws regarding a DPC agreement.

Direct Primary Care gives doctors more freedom with patients to practice medicine instead of being tied to insurance requirements. With the MAFP championing the DPC movement in Mississippi, we have ensured that DPC agreements cannot be viewed as insurance policies. If you are considering moving to a DPC agreement with your patients, make sure your contracts mirror the state law. All of the following requirements must be met:
1) Be in writing;
2) Be signed by the individual patient or his or her legal representative and be made  available for the records of the primary care provider or agent of the primary care provider;
3) Allow either party to terminate the agreement on written notice to the other party;
4) Describe the scope of the primary care services that are covered by the periodic fee;
5) Specify the periodic fee for ongoing care under the agreement;
6) Specify the duration of the agreement, any automatic renewal periods, and require that no more than twelve (12) months of the periodic fee be paid in advance. Upon discontinuing the agreement all unearned funds, as determined by the lesser of normal undiscounted fee-for-service charges that would have been billed in place of the agreement or the remainder of the membership contract, are returned to the patient; and
7) Prominently state in writing that the agreement is not health insurance.

  The MAFP is supportive of legislation at the federal level that would clarify that a DPC is not health insurance. Federal lawmakers are aware of the growing interest in the direct primary care model and have introduced legislation. To read the full AAFP story click here .
