A Message from the Dean...
"We don't go to church to pay bills!"

"He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?."-Micah 6:8

I once served as the Interim Rector of a church whose previous rector had left the church with two-thirds of the congregation. The people who remained were dispirited and grieved. Obviously, the financial situation was pretty dire. The vestry spent a lot of time talking about which bills to pay and which to hold off on for awhile longer.
After spending a good deal of time bewailing their financial situation, the treasurer of the church finally piped up, "Guys, really, I can figure out which bills to pay and which bills not to pay. I need you to spend your time figuring out why we're still here. What I do know is that we don't go to church to pay bills!"
So, why are we here? Why is St. Matthew's Cathedral still in existence after over 150 years? We are here not to do a fine Anglican liturgy. Neither are we here to present high art music. Nor are we here to preserve a 100 year-old building.
Put simply, we are here to help people to "do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with [our] God."
All else are means to those ends.
By the way, Jesus repeated that when he called us to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind; and to love our neighbor as ourselves.
