CHARLOTTE, N.C.
- (December 18, 2017) - The Humane Society of Charlotte (HSC) will take part in rescuing dogs from St. Croix, to receive animals victims of Hurricane Maria. At the request of ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), the HSC will receive 16 dogs. In collaboration with ASPCA and Cloud Nine Rescue Flights, the HSC team will assess and bring back these 16 dogs to the shelter here in Charlotte, North Carolina where they will be cared for and eventually find their forever homes.
The HSC is known for their work with the ASPCA, working to help animals in areas devastated by natural disasters, including a partnership with Operation Grey Muzzle in August to take in homeless pets from Puerto Rico.
"We are glad the timing aligned and we are in a position to assist with this rescue. HSC will be providing support by supplying a team ready to receive the transport here in Charlotte," said Huck Nawaz, Vice President of Operations of the Humane Society of Charlotte.
"While the ASPCA continues to provide daily care and support for hundreds of animals impacted by Hurricane Maria in St. Croix, we are continuously working to relocate homeless cats and dogs to the States where they can escape the devastation left behind by the storm to find safe and loving homes," said Jessica Rushin, partnerships senior manager for ASPCA Field Investigations & Response.
"The ASPCA has helped transport nearly 300 homeless animals from its emergency shelter so far, and we are grateful to work with response partners like The Humane Society of Charlotte, to make this life-saving effort possible so these animals can move on to the next chapter in their lives."
Nearly 600 animals have been cared for at the ASPCA's emergency shelter, which was established after the largest animal shelter on the island was severely damaged by the storm and forced to temporarily halt operations. Since late September, more than 100 ASPCA responders have deployed to the devastated island to conduct field rescues and provide daily care for displaced animals at the emergency shelter.
