Over the next few weeks, Albertans are encouraged to provide their comments and suggestions as government prepares for Budget 2017. Minister of Finance Joe Ceci will host meetings with community leaders and the public while visiting towns and cities around the province with Medicine Hat slated for Monday, January 23, 2017 and a Southern Alberta town halls scheduled on January 31st. An  online  submission page will also collect feedback until Feb. 3. For the telephone town halls, individuals with home lines will be dialed directly while those with cellular phones can sign up for a call. The federal government is considering taxing employer-paid health and dental benefits. In addition to hundreds or thousands of dollars that would be added to Canadians' tax bills, it also means that many employers will no longer provide coverage to employees. When a similar tax was introduced in Quebec, 20% of employers dropped health and dental benefits for employees. Studies suggest the removal of this tax benefit across the board could result in a decrease of 50% of small firms who will be able to offer health benefits... read more

The Government of Alberta has created a discussion paper called Continuing the Conversation. The discussion paper includes topics such as parental leave for councillors, collaboration with school boards and indigenous communities, and environmental stewardship. The Government is asking Albertans to check out the discussion paper and provide your feedback by completing this survey by January 31... read more
 
The National Association of Development Organizations (NADO), which represents multi-jurisdictional Economic Development Districts at the national level in the areas of policy development, training and best practices, awarded the 2016 NADO Innovation Award to Bear Paw Development, along with Palliser Economic Partnership, the City of Havre, Hill County, City of Medicine Hat and the Montana Department of Commerce for the recent efforts to develop a feasibility study for the Wild Horse Border Crossing in northern Montana and southern Alberta. As the Medicine Hat & District Chamber of Commerce has been an advocate for the extension of hours at this port of entry, the desire will be that the business case will be the element required to take this advocacy to action... read more

According to anthropologist Anthony Aveni, many New Year's traditions stemmed from the desire to ward off evil spirits. While I'm sure many people are happy to say goodbye to the upsets of 2016, Aveni, who has researched extensively the roots of seasonal holidays at Colgate University in New York, also says a new year is a time for transition. QinetiQ announces this morning that it has acquired Meggitt Defence Systems Limited and Meggitt Holdings Canada Inc. (together "Meggitt Target Systems") from Meggitt for £57.5 million on a cash-free, debt-free basis. Meggitt Target Systems is a leading international provider of unmanned aerial, naval and land-based target systems and services for test and evaluation ("T&E") and operational training and rehearsal. The business is expected to generate approximately £28 million of revenue and approximately £5.5m of operating profit in the year to 31 December 2016. Meggitt Target Systems provides target systems to approximately 40 countries from its operations in the UK and Canada, and performs on-site target services in 15 of those countries. It will form part of QinetiQ's new International business unit and will be reported within QinetiQ's Global Products division.
