Maiden Hawaii Naturals Launches Kuleana™
New beauty oil line meets consumer demand for locally made natural products

After months of product development, consumer research and branding, Pacific Biodiesel  through its subsidiary Maiden Hawaii Naturals has launched Kuleana™, a collection of natural beauty oils and facial cleansers made with locally grown ingredients. This handcrafted  skincare line currently includes three blends for different skin types - Soothe, Nourish and Rejuve - made with plant-based oils including macadamia nut, kukui, coconut, avocado and green coffee oils, all produced by Maiden Hawaii Naturals.
"In Hawaiian, kuleana means a personal sense of responsibility. This value inspires our company's mission to practice sustainability, support local farming and fight climate change - which makes it the ideal name for our new brand of beauty oil products made as part of our company's sustainable agriculture and energy operation that's helping Hawaii achieve a clean energy future," explained Marketing Director Joy Galatro.
The new Kuleana products are now available for purchase at www.KuleanaBeauty.com and on Amazon.com. As the company expands its sales operation, the products will also be available for purchase at resort spas, day spas, and specialty boutiques statewide.
Recently named the #1 Spa in America by USA Today, the ʻAwili Spa and Salon located within the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort is the first spa customer in the state to use our Maui sunflower oil for massage and other spa treatments. Kuleana beauty oils will also be offered for sale at the spa.

Amazon representatives assisted with product photography and the many other steps required for this initial setup. Kuleana products are now "live" and available for purchase directly through Amazon and Amazon Prime. "It was an amazing opportunity for Pacific Biodiesel," Sloan said. "We were one of just 75 local businesses that were able to take advantage of the amazing reach Amazon offers through its fulfillment centers."

Oahu Facility Gets Fleet and Infrastructure Upgrades
Increased customer demand calls for additional equipment
  • Pacific Biodiesel's Oahu operation has added new and upgraded vehicles to its fleet  to meet the demand as business grows. A 4,000-gallon Kenworth tanker truck for grease trap collection has been put into operation along with a new International cab and chassis for a refurbished 1,000-gallon tank to accommodate both used cooking oil collection and small grease trap servicing.
  • The company's Sand Island facility has also installed a new 25,000-gallon stainless steel tank for processing grease trap waste as part of the separation process. When grease trap waste arrives at the Oahu site, the 30-foot-high tank is used to settle the product to get a better separation of water, interface and oil. The oil is then sent to the Big Island refinery, while the interface layer is shipped to Maui for compost. The Oahu operation, which collects almost 6 million gallons of grease trap waste a year from its own fleet and other collection companies, yields 8-10% oil recovery as biodiesel feedstock.

At right, a 25,000 gallon tank is lowered into place at Pacific Biodiesel's Sand Island facility on Oahu.

Oahu's Brigitte Koike Earns "Top Shaka" Award for the 3rd Quarter

Selected from 13 nominees received in the third quarter of 2017, Account Executive and Administrative Assistant Brigitte Koike received top honors as our company's "Employee of the Quarter" for the third quarter of 2017.
Koike was nominated for a "Shaka Shoutout" in August by Oahu Operations Manager George Aiwohi for stepping outside her usual role to help a co-worker and a client. "Late on a Friday afternoon there was an emergency run, and the driver who was dispatched needed help," Aiwohi reported. "No one else was available so Brigitte volunteered. That was pretty awesome."
Oahu Fleet Manager, Moses Magno, who coordinates the schedules for all the drivers noted, "Brigitte really cares about each and every customer. She's an awesome asset to all of us here on Oahu."
Upon receiving the award, Koike said, "Thank you so much, but I really share this with all our team. Everyone here works hard to ensure our success."
Director of Operations Jenna Long commented about the award saying, "Brigitte has demonstrated great teamwork and commitment to meeting customers' needs. She stepped up enormously when asked, which makes us all proud to work with her.
In addition to the admiration of co-workers, each quarterly award recipient receives a $100 gift certificate and will be eligible for the company's Employee of the Year honors.

Fresh sunflower blooms enhanced the Pacific Biodiesel display as marketing team members Beth Mathias and Joy Galatro readied to greet guests at the 2017 Maui Electric Energy Fair.
join Maui Electric at its annual Energy Fair last month.
Marketing Director Joy Galatro and Marketing Associate Beth Mathias manned the Pacific Biodiesel display at the Queen Kaahumanu Center community event. With freshly picked sunflowers on the table, the family-centered event offered a great opportunity to talk with residents and community members about Pacific Biodiesel's renewable fuel by making the connection with the sunflower fields. "People were drawn to our table because of the sunflowers," noted Mathias. "It was a great conversation starter that led to informing residents about why we were planting sunflowers and how biodiesel can be used to meet many of the county's transportation and energy needs. For many it was an eye-opener."
As the event came to an end, there were lots of smiles as the Pacific Biodiesel team handed out the sunflowers to departing visitors.
The Pacific Biodiesel team agreed that the outreach event was a resounding success and plans to include Hawaiian Electric energy fairs on Hawaii Island and Oahu in its 2018 event calendar.

Marketing Director Joy Galatro explained how Pacific Biodiesel is making the highest quality biodiesel in the country through recycling and sustainable ag.

Visitors to the Pacific Biodiesel booth were thrilled to get sunflowers at the end of the day. Marketing Associate Beth Mathias helped distribute the blooms.

Founded in 1995, Pacific Biodiesel is Hawaii's award-winning and internationally recognized producer of renewable fuels and the only commercial biofuel producer in the state. This Maui-based company established and operated the very first retail biodiesel pump in America and for the past two decades has built a solid reputation as a leading pioneer in the renewable energy industry. Throughout its history, Pacific Biodiesel's mission has remained constant: to promote a clean, sustainable energy future through the community-based production of renewable fuels. Today, with more than 80 employees statewide, Pacific Biodiesel excels in constructing and operating biodiesel processing plants, advancing process technology, and producing and marketing quality fuels. The company is also involved in many sustainable agriculture-related projects - including testing sunflowers as a potential year-round feedstock for producing biodiesel and exploring innovative ways to turn agriculture waste into useful products that can create new revenue streams for farmers, such as recycling waste papaya to grow algae for use in farm fertilizer and as feed for local aquaculture and livestock. With a nameplate production capacity of 5.5 million gallons annually, Pacific Biodiesel's Big Island plant utilizes state-of-the art distillation technology to produce the highest-quality biodiesel in the country.
