Names emerge for ag secretary as Trump transition begins
With Preside nt Elect Donald Trump's success on election day, efforts to begin the transition are underway.  Rumors are already circulating about potential candidates for Secretary of Agriculture.
Names mentioned thus far include:
  • Sam Brownback, Governor of Kansas
  • Terry Branstad, Governor of Iowa
  • Chuck Conner, CEO of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives
  • Dave Heineman, Former Governor of Nebraska
  • Charles Herbster, Agri-businessman from Nebraska
  • Mike McCloskey, Dairy industry executive from Indiana
  • Sonny Perdue, Former Governor of Georgia
  • Rick Perry, Former Governor of Texas
  • Bruce Rastetter - Summit Ag Group of Alden, Iowa
All of these people also currently serve on Trump's agriculture advisory committee, which was named in August 2016 to help guide the campaign's agriculture policy.  The over 60-person committee includes Congressional leaders, former and current state elected officials and representatives from industry.
In addition to filling the top spot at USDA, there are large numbers of other appointed positions at USDA.  Helping to manage this transition process will be Mike Torrey, former Deputy Chief of Staff at USDA during George W. Bush's administration.
U.S. dairy traceability hits 80% goal
To date, 26 processors have pledged to follow best practices established by The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, and more than 80% of the U.S. milk supply is now covered by voluntary dairy traceability guidelines, thanks to the recent pledge of another large dairy processor, according to the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC).

This reaches a milestone as The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy set an 80% coverage goal when it released its traceability best practices in 2013. At that point, only five processors, covering 20% of the country's milk supply, immediately agreed to embrace the new standards.

Now, after three years, 26 processors have made the traceability pledge, including Agri-Mark, Dairy Farmers of America, Dean Foods, Land O'Lakes, Darigold/ Northwest Dairy, Michigan Milk Producers Assn. and Upstate Niagara Cooperative.

Massachusetts animal welfare vote limits choices
Third-generation, family-run Diemand Farm raises chickens for eggs and meat, turkeys for Thanksgiving meals and a small herd of beef cattle in Massachusetts. Diemand Farm is the only egg farm in the state of Massachusetts affected by an animal welfare ballot question, but Pete Dieman said his message about the sound welfare practices he implements on his farm were unable to sway voters on Election Day.

In Massachusetts, voters decided in favor of Question 3 by a margin of 78% to 22%, making Massachusetts the first state to ban confinement of farm animals and to restrict the sale of animal products in the state that come from these confinement practices. The end result likely will be decreased choices for consumers and businesses, agricultural groups said following the vote.

Ballot Question 3 will prohibit Massachusetts farms from confining breeding pigs, veal calves or egg-laying hens in cages that prevent the animals from lying down, standing up, fully extending their limbs or turning around. The ballot question also prohibits Massachusetts businesses from selling eggs or raw cuts of veal or pork produced from confined animals.

TPP vote swayed both ways by dairy
Dairy producers were one of the last agriculture sectors to throw their support behind the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). With House Speaker Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) hailing from the second-largest dairy-producing state, he may have to weigh the support of his constituents on whether or not to allow for a vote on TPP in the next few weeks during the lame-duck session of Congress.

The National Milk Producers Federation and U.S. Dairy Export Council have lauded groundbreaking new commitments on sanitary and phytosanitary issues and significant improvements in how geographical indications (GIs) are handled within TPP. The GI improvements have become especially important as the European Union continues to wield GIs as nontariff trade barriers and limit market access for U.S. dairy exporters.

ADSA News and Happenings
Supporting FY17 funding for  USDA-REE-ERS and NASS
ADSA and FASS joined with 24 other science based and producer organizations in support of USDA-REE-ERS and NASS FY17 funding. In a letter to leaders of the House and Senate Appropriations Subcommittees on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies the coalition noted that USDA produces valuable data that directly informs decisions by food and agricultural market participants, agricultural input and food businesses, banks and other credit institutions and those who make food, farm, economic development and trade policy. American agriculture, rural America and food and resource-based industries depend on the reliable production of timely, accurate and objective food, agricultural, rural economic and resource statistics and market information. Additionally, the statistics and analysis made possible by these agencies provide a greater understanding of farm household dynamics, advance evidence-based policy approaches and give insight into the health of the farm economy. The full letter is available on the ADSA website, click here.

Attention: Animal Science Companies! - Are You Looking for a Way to Thank Your Best Customers?
S-PAC (Searchable Proceedings of Animal Conferences) is the largest online collection of proceedings from animal-related conferences in the world.  It allows subscribers from across the globe to access 560 proceedings from 59 of the top animal-related conferences worldwide-and it is constantly growing (visit http://spac.adsa.org to view a full listing of current conferences).  It turns conference proceedings from a book on your shelf, a CD on your desk, or a file hiding somewhere on the Internet to a comprehensive source of valuable, highly searchable information available whenever you need it. Users can search every article in the database in a single pass for exactly the information they need. It is a great tool for anyone in the industry, and its value increases every time new proceedings and conferences are added to the collection.
Does this sound like a resource that you would like to share with your best customers?
ADSA now provides an easy and affordable way for you to do that-the S-PAC Bundle. You can now purchase a bundle of subscriptions to distribute to your customers to show them how much you appreciate their business ... and they will keep you in mind as they use S-PAC!  Here are the basics:
Determine which bundle best meets your needs (multiple bundles may be purchased):
  • 25 subscriptions at $60* each:             total cost = $1,500
  • 50 subscriptions at $55 each:              total cost = $2,750
  • 100 subscriptions at $45 each:            total cost = $4,500
*Note: The ADSA individual member rate is $75 and the non-member rate is $150, so buying bundled subscriptions provides a considerable savings!
Then go to https://secure.fass.org/SPAC_bundles.asp  to place your order.   A pdf with your bundle's unique access codes will sent to you as a pdf, suitable for printing on business card stock, for easy distribution.  The individual to whom you give S-PAC will use the code to activate their S-PAC subscription (ADSA membership is not required to activate subscriptions), which runs for 365 days from date of activation. There is nothing else you need do except know that you will stand out and be remembered and appreciated by your most valuable customers.
