SUNY Cobleskill hosts successful
Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge
SUNY Cobleskill hosted the 14th annual Northeast Regional Dairy Challenge in Glens Falls, NY. One hundred twenty students, representing 13 colleges and universities throughout the northeast and Canada attended the event.
The regional Dairy Challenge places students on mixed-university teams of four or five individuals to analyze all aspects of a working dairy. Teams assessed the dairy's facilities, nutrition, financials, reproduction, animal health and much more. Together, they collaborated on a 20-minute team presentation that detailed their observations and suggestions to a panel of judges and participating farm families.
Farms evaluated in the competition included Ideal Dairy, Toolite Dairy and Welcome Stock Dairy. All teams participated in educational workshops and tours at King Brothers Dairy.
The top two teams for each farm are below:
Farm 1
·         First place, Team 1: Emily Anger, SUNY Cobleskill; Emily Chittenden, Cornell University; Josh Keller, Ohio State-ATI; and Quentin Nelson, VermontTechnical College
·         Second place, Team 2: Marikate Barber, SUNY Cobleskill; Gregory Bohemen, McGill University; Grant Feldspausch, Cornell University; Allison Mangun, Ohio State-ATI; and Nathan Oakman, Morrisville State College

U.S. dairy traceability hits 80% goal
The House Agriculture Committee held its final hearing Nov. 16 in a two-year long top-to-bottom review to examine the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Chairman Michael Conaway (R., Texas) announced he will release a comprehensive report detailing the findings of the hearing series in the coming weeks.

Conaway said after hearing from 55 witnesses at 16 different hearings, these witnesses have expressed an array of opinions on the successes and failures of SNAP at serving people in need of nutritious, wholesome food. "They have shared great accomplishments, but have also pointed out that there is room for improvement," Conaway said.

House Agriculture Committee ranking member Collin Peterson (D., Minn.) shared that many issues have been covered within the SNAP hearings, but the "overwhelming theme of the testimony has shown us that while there are some areas for improvement, SNAP works."

Dairy farmers start De Jong Foundation
Donald and Cheri De Jong, a husband and wife dairy farming duo, are paying their success forward by launching The De Jong Foundation. The De Jong Foundation's mission is to empower dairy farmers by investing in research, education and programs that inspire innovative practices and nourish the world through sustainable dairy farming.

In addition, the De Jongs serve as the executive leadership and founders for their family farming operations, including Natural Prairie Dairy Farms, Northside Farms and Jersey Gold Dairy. Over the past three decades, they have grown a once-small operation into one of America's top milk producers.

"This is about inspiring innovation," said Donald De Jong, co-founder of the De Jong Foundation. "We are passionate about empowerment, education and providing the tools to improve the lives of all dairy farmers."

Low growth in global carbon emissions continues for third year
Global carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels did not grow in 2015 and are projected to rise only slightly in 2016, marking three years of almost no growth, according to researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the U.K. and the Global Carbon Project.

The projected rise of only 0.2% for 2016 marks a clear break from the rapid emissions growth of 2.3% per year in the decade leading up to 2013, with just 0.7% growth seen in 2014.

The new data were published in the journal Earth System Science Data. It shows emissions growth remained below 1% despite gross domestic product growth exceeding 3%.

ADSA asks "Did You Know" we are your "Voice for Science"?
ADSA is committed to being the "Voice of Science" for the dairy industry. Through ADSA's own science policy team, and FASS , we provide a powerful and influential voice, advocating for the animal sciences and animal agriculture. Through FASS we:
  • Are represented in Washington DC by the Randel Group, whose support of animal science extends to other events and meetings throughout the country. Monthly Updates are provided to ADSA and all FASS animal science clients.
  • Participate in research priority setting meetings such as the recent USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) stakeholder sessions to provide input on priorities for animal health research.
  • Supported the effort on FAIR 2012 that established research, education and outreach priorities for animal agriculture that were used in the 2014 Farm Bill. These priorities continue to provide guidance when responding to agency requests for input on research, education or outreach needs.
ADSA and FASS, working through formal and informal coalitions, share information with legislators, regulators, funders and the public about the value of agricultural research and the need for funding to support that work. Copies of recent coalition letters are available on our website for information and use by members and the public.
Our ADSA Spokesperson program works to ensure that consumers, policy makers and producers have accurate science based information available to make decisions. Members receive training  and are available to respond to questions from print, electronic, broadcast and social media and to assist in responding to misinformation being shared through any of these venues.  We also participate in USDA and industry research priority setting activities. Regular contact with trade publications enhances coverage of research by ADSA members and introduces it to producers and processors.  Our collaboration with Elsevier to produce and distribute press releases on JDS articles of high consumer interest expands dissemination of our reach beyond the science and agricultural communities to the business community and the general public.  All of these activities serve to raise the visibility of ADSA and dairy science.
Thank you for being a member of ADSA!   If you haven't renewed yet, you can do it here. If you are not yet a member, now is a great time to join and begin gaining all the many benefits of membership.  Click here to join.

Don't Wait!  Become a Sponsor of the Large Dairy Herd Management (3rd edition, e-book)
Nonprofit organizations, companies, and individuals are invited to take advantage of the opportunity to sponsor one or more of the remaining available sections of the Large Dairy Herd Management (LDHM) e-book currently in development. Sponsors will receive recognition for a three-year period as the e-book is used throughout the dairy industry worldwide. The ADSA® Foundation is publishing this extensively revised and updated edition of the book in early 2017.
The third edition (98 chapters) will be available in e-book format (designed to allow for convenient updating) with completely new content. It will be sold at ADSA member, nonmember, and student rates and distributed directly by ADSA.
Anticipated users of the e-book include dairy management professionals, progressive producers, extension educators, consultants, upper-level university students studying dairy science and management, and allied industry representatives. The book is written in a practical application style but reflects the scientific rigor of the Journal of Dairy Science®.
As an e-book sponsor, you will receive international recognition for supporting the delivery of up-to-date, peer-reviewed dairy management information to the global dairy industry. Initial e-book section sponsors will have right of first refusal to renew after the initial three-year period of recognition. DON'T WAIT! There are only a limited number of sections available and sponsorship needs to be confirmed prior to publication.   For information on sponsorship and the worldwide recognition it will bring, please contact Larry Miller at largedairyherdmanagement@adsa.org
