The 40th Annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon: One to Remember
This past Sunday, more than 43,000 runners, an event record, crossed the finish line of the 40th Annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon on Sunday. American elites made their mark, the city bumped up its safety measures, and local runners impressed too

Also, registration for 2018 was already announced; it's never too early to prepare!
Writer Who Trained with Elite Runners Unexpectedly Becomes One
Acclaimed running author Matt Fitzgerald, 46, established himself as one of the top marathoners his age Sunday, completing the Bank of America Chicago Marathon in a time of 2:39:30. The performance placed him 146th among nearly 45,000 participants and 5th in the men's 45-49 age group. Only three runners older than Fitzgerald beat him to the finish line of the race.

Known for bestselling books including Racing Weight and How Bad Do You Want It?, Fitzgerald ran the Chicago Marathon as the culmination of a unique experiment in which he spent 13 weeks training with HOKA ONE ONE Northern Arizona Elite, a team of professional runners based in Flagstaff, Arizona. Arriving there from his home in California with a personal-best marathon time of 2:41:42, set nine years earlier, he improved to a degree that surprised both him and NAZ Elite Coach Ben Rosario.

Training With Nike Part Two: Race Day
In Training With Nike Part 1, Chicago Athlete Ambassador Mandi Florip discussed her in-depth training with Nike for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. In this segment, Florip shares her race day experience, and how the Nike Breaking2 shoe helped her get a BQ.

The countless spectators, volunteers and racers were full of smiles, encouragement and cheers. My gear felt airy, my Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4%, aka Breaking2, shoes were literally bouncing off the pavement, my legs felt strong and my hydration felt balanced.

As I crossed the finish line with a 3:24 time, I could hardly believe it. The 14 weeks of strength training, tempo and speed runs, combined with the technologically advanced Nike gear and shoe wear had an incredible impact on my time. In just 14 weeks, I dropped 16 minutes and 36 seconds off my marathon time, leaving me with a cushioned Boston Qualifying time and a massive sense of accomplishment.

Navy Pier Flyover to begin phase two this week
Chicago's seemingly never ending  Navy Pier Flyover construction project is ready to began phase two to extend a dedicated jogging and biking trail south over the Odgen Slip and DuSable Park. Under construction  since March of 2014, the elevated pathway was designed to reduce crossing conflicts between lakefront trail users and automobiles going to and from Chicago's Navy Pier and Lake Shore Drive.

The third and final phase of the project will replace perhaps the single most treacherous stretch of the Lakefront Trail with a dedicated path above the Chicago River. Currently, joggers and cyclists must cross the waterway along the sidewalk of Lower Lake Shore Drive.

Though anticipated to be complete in 2018, the Navy Pier flyover project has progressed at a proverbial snail's pace. In fact, the pathway has taken longer to complete than San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge,  observed John Greenfield of The Chicago Reader earlier this year.

IRONMAN World Championships This Weekend
For over three decades the IRONMAN World Championship has brought the world's best athletes together in competition.

The IRONMAN World Championship centers on the dedication and courage exhibited by participants who demonstrate the IRONMAN mantra that ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.® On October 14th, over 2,000 athletes will embark on a 140.6-mile journey that presents the ultimate test of body, mind and spirit to earn the title of IRONMAN.

Triathlon fans around the world are captivated every October as they follow the IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The attention shifts from triathlon fans to sports enthusiasts a month later when the coverage of the KONA™ race appears on NBC.

Chicago's New '312 RiverRun' to Include 2 Mile Trail
On Oct. 4, Mayor Rahm Emanuel broke ground on a major project to transform the riverfront neighborhood on Chicago's North Side into one of the City's largest recreational hubs that provides residents with an unobstructed network of parks and recreational amenities.

The 312 RiverRun will connect the surrounding Irving Park, North Center, Avondale and Albany Park neighborhoods to three parks with one path for nearly two consecutive miles.

Once completed, 312 RiverRun will connect Horner Park to the north to California and Clark Parks to the south. It will extend across 95 acres with facilities and programming for every athletic activity supported by the Chicago Park District including: softball fields, wheelchair accessible baseball fields, fitness centers, playgrounds, an indoor ice skating rink, tennis courts, the mountain bike/Bmx trail, an outdoor pool, boat houses and more.
