Dear Colleagues:

I took down our holiday cards today. We had them taped to the edge of my assistant's desk so everyone who came into the office over the past few weeks could see them. They were all colors, shapes and sizes, with all sorts of lettering and an array of holiday greetings. Most of the cards came from Ohio, but many came from states all around the country, with a few from such faraway places as London and Tokyo. The majority were personalized with handwritten signatures and brief notes, and some had photos of friends or family members. A few cards included full-length descriptions of all that had happened to the sender during the year.

As I took the cards down, I read each one again. Although I had read them all when they first arrived, I found that reading them again -- all at once -- was a very different experience. It reminded me how fortunate we are to know so many people who care enough to wish us a "happy holiday." The fact that they all reached out in this way tells me that our college has done great things over the years. We enjoy close connections with people who celebrate the winter holidays, share their feelings, and care about others. And we have been befriended by some of the best people around -- friends, colleagues, and others who want us to know we are important to them and that they're thinking of us during this special time of the year.

For me, taking down the holiday cards marks the end of one year and the beginning of another. It's a special time -- one that I cherish and that makes me feel good about the year ahead. I hope you also found a meaningful way to close 2016, and I hope you are anticipating a most rewarding and fulfilling New Year!
