Iowa STEM BEST Program
(Businesses Engaging Students & Teachers)
Awarded in NC Region

We would like to congratulate  Boone Community School District and  Story County Consortium for being chosen by the STEM Council's executive committee for the STEM BEST (Businesses Engaging Students and Teachers) award. By collaborating with business stakeholders, these awardees describe how they plan to bridge these two cultures through education programing.

  • Boone Community School District students will work directly with business leaders through hands-on project-based learning opportunities which will allow students to develop their skillset, network with leaders in the community and augment their knowledge of STEM careers post-secondary experience.
  • Story County Consortium's STEM curriculum will affect seven school districts (Ames, Ballard, Collins-Maxwell, Colo-NESCO, Gilbert, Nevada and Roland-Story). They plan to partner with Des Moines Area Community College, the Ames Chamber of Commerce, Ames Economic Development Commission and multiple Story County business to help implement problem-based and interdisciplinary STEM curriculum in order to meet the community's education and economic development needs.

STEM Career Videos Now Available!

A young engineer at Accumold, a chemist at Wells Blue Bunny, an entomologist at DuPont Pioneer and a programmer at Acieta may be the next great ambassadors for Iowa STEM.

This year, the STEM Council and Strategic America created a series of Iowa STEM Career videos to educate students on some really cool, successful occupations right here in Iowa.

We're asking you, our wonderful STEM supporters, to utilize these videos in ways you see fit, possibly on your social media channels, in the classroom with students, in presentations or on your organization's website. They are a great resource that connect students to potential STEM careers in our state and we hope you share them with partners, colleagues and many others.

You can find them on our website at: http://iowastem.gov/careers

Meet Dr. Jose Amaya
North Central STEM Advisory Board Member  CoreyR

North Central STEM Hub advisory board member and associate professor of English, Dr. Jose Amaya, wants everyone to know that "STEM is not just for students going into engineering or math, it's for students going into humanities or law. STEM is for all and benefits everyone."

Amaya discovered this first hand with his daughter stating, "[she] participated in STEM programs while attending Ames high school and I could see how these programs helped with her critical thinking." He continued, "Now as a journalist, she can recognize that some of her skillsets were founded through STEM courses and not just courses that focused primarily on her major."

By thinking of STEM as a whirlpool, he believes that all fields within STEM intertwine. However, he also sees this to be true with fields outside of the realms of science, technology, engineering and math.
