New Form of Autism Found
[Source: Medical News Today]

Autism spectrum disorders affect around one percent of the world's population and are characterized by a range of difficulties in social interaction and communication. In a new study published in Cell, a team of researchers led by Gaia Novarino, Professor at IST Austria, has identified a new genetic cause of ASD.

Gaia Novarino explains why this finding is significant: "There are many different genetic mutations causing autism, and they are all very rare. This heterogeneity makes it difficult to develop effective treatments. Our analysis not only revealed a new autism-linked gene, but also identified the mechanism by which its mutation causes autism. Excitingly, mutations in other genes share the same autism-causing mechanism, indicating that we may have underscored a subgroup of ASDs."

Researchers in acoustics and psychology teamed up to better define and study this impact.

Boys Who Sit Still Have a Harder Time Learning to Read
[Source: Time Magazine]

Anybody who has watched little boys for even five seconds knows that they are exhausting. At school, they tear around the playground, bolt through corridors and ricochet off classroom walls. According to a new Finnish study, this is all helping them to be better at reading.

FAPE Case Draws Flurry Of Attention
[Source:  Disability Scoop]

As the U.S. Supreme Court prepares to consider how much educational benefit schools must provide students with disabilities, everyone from lawmakers to states and advocates are weighing in.

Inclusion Gains Traction Outside The Classroom
[Source: Disability Scoop]

Kendall Foster was the King's High School robotics teams' biggest fan. She loved coming to practices to see her sister, Delaney, when Delaney was a student at the private Shoreline school.

Kendall's friends were interested in robots and the robotics team, too. So Delaney started researching what might be available for her sister, who has autism.

She didn't find any robotics teams that were open to students with cognitive disabilities,

OT Corner: 5 Tips to Help With Dyscalculia
[Source:  The Pocket Occupational Therapist]

Many children struggle with difficulties in writing and math. When a child is smart and has a high IQ, struggling with something that comes so simply for other students in the class often leads to anxiety and low self-esteem. As with most disabilities, symptoms emerge at different times and each child shows signs at different times. Dyscalculia consists of difficulty understanding the abstract concept of HOW numbers relate to each other. The difficulty is compounded since mathematics are used in directions, keeping track of a schedule, cooking, time, measurement and many other daily life tasks.
