November 2017 - IE SHRM News & Updates
November Lunch Monthly Meeting - Doubletree Hotel, San Bernardino
"Improve Mental Health in the Workplace"

Join us for lunch on November 16 at the Doubletree Hotel in San Bernardino for our topic "Improve Mental Health in the Workplace." Employee mental health concerns cost United States workplaces billions of dollars annually due to presenteeism, absenteeism, and other costs. It's estimated that one in five American workers experiences a mental health challenge each year.  And yet, most executives and HR leaders shy away from the subject.

International research has shown that engaging the workforce in specific mental wellness activities will increase protective factors in individuals and decrease workplace distress while boosting productivity and income.

EHRP Program
Testimonial by  Michael Moorman, PHRca

As a recently PHRca certified professional who's trying to break into the Human Resources job market, my desire to network and sharpen my HR knowledge is on overdrive!  Inland Empire SHRM is on the front line creating and evolving programs for new and seasoned HR practitioners.  Through attending IE SHRM meetings, I learned about their new Emerging HR Professionals (EHRP) program.  I was hooked after our first networking meeting at Dave n' Buster's where we got to interact with multiple board members and seasoned HR practitioners from IE SHRM.  Our last EHRP meeting, held on November 4, taught the fundamental of "Counseling & Discipline".  The group exercises were awesome!  The format focused on all the fundamentals with practical application and real experiences from our own HR gurus.  The best part is it is free and attendees earned CE credits!

Thanks to our IE SHRM board and all our speakers for developing and supporting the next generation of HR professionals!

You Don't Need to Ask for Salary History
Published on October 20, 2017

Any idea what's happening January 1, 2018? Yes, I'll be watching the Tournament of Roses Parade from Pasadena, California, but that's not what I'm talking about. This coming January, the new salary history restrictions under the  AB 168 adds Section 432.3 to the California Labor Code , takes effect. The new law will not only prohibit salary history inquiries but also prohibit employers from relying on an applicant's salary history as a factor in determining whether to offer employment or determining what salary to offer.  Learn more
Employer Held Potentially Liable for Failing to Prevent Sexual Assault
By Ronald W. Novotny

When can an employer be liable for failing to prevent a sexual assault or rape of an employee?  The California Court of Appeal in the recent case of M.F. v. Pacific Pearl Hotel Management, LLC (D070150, FOURTH APPELLATE DISTRICT, DIVISION ONE, 10/26/17), helped provide some answers to this question.

The plaintiff in the case worked as a housekeeper in a five-building hotel property.  One morning, the hotel's Engineering Manager saw a drunk man who was not a guest of the hotel walking around hotel property with a beer in his hand.  The Manager first saw the trespasser on the third floor of one of the hotel buildings and then on the second floor of the building, and once more in an elevator going to the first floor.  The Manager did not ask the trespasser to leave and did not report the trespasser's presence to housekeeping management or the police.  Read More

CSUSB SHRM Student Chapter
Message from the Chapter

Dear IE SHRM

Five of us board members, from the CSUSB SHRM student chapter, were given the opportunity to attend the IE SHRM Annual Conference on October 19th, 2017. We cannot express how thankful we are to have had the chance to attend such an amazing event. To be honest, we weren't entirely sure what to expect from the conference, but what we didn't expect was for it to have been as entertaining and engaging as it was. Each of us took away a unique and invaluable experience, as we dove into the world of Human Resources. Some highlights from the conference were listening to a variety of enthusiastic guest speakers, networking with industry professionals, and creating future opportunities for our club members. Not only did we learn a great deal of different subjects in HR, such as what to expect from the future workforce and compensation, we also had fun in the process!

Without the support of the IE SHRM Board, this experience wouldn't have been possible. Also, thank you to the IE SHRM members who attended the conference and took the time to mingle with us college students. There are several different ideas we plan on sharing with our student members in terms of involvement and keeping informed about the latest HR regulations. This was, hands down, one of our most memorable experiences while being involved in IE SHRM. We hope to extend the same opportunity to more students for next year.

Thank you for your time and support.

Our best,

CSUSB SHRM Board Members
