Many of the populations we serve in workforce development are not only difficult to recruit, they can often be even more challenging to retain in our programs and engage with our services at the highest levels.  While this webinar focuses on people in reentry, many of the concepts are applicable to other difficult to engage youth and adult populations in the ranks of the hard-to-employ.

WHAT WORKFORCE PROGRAM MODELS
CAN PRODUCE LONG TERM UPWARD MOBILITY
FOR LOW INCOME INDIVIDUALS?

Individuals with low incomes often struggle to advance in the labor market, yet at the same time; some employers report difficulty finding workers with the necessary skills. WorkAdvance is a workforce development model that seeks to address the needs of both of these groups through its "dual customer" approach. The model offers training and placement services to help prepare individuals for quality jobs in sectors where there is strong local demand and the opportunity for career advancement.  This brief provides an interim look at the effectiveness of WorkAdvance at promoting upward mobility in the long term by updating the economic impact findings through the third year of follow-up.

GOOD JOBS THAT PAY WITHOUT A BA

There are 30 million good jobs that do not require a Bachelor's degree. These good jobs pay an average of $55,000 per year, and a minimum of $35,000 annually.  In the past, these good jobs were found almost entirely in manufacturing and other blue-collar industries. Today we find good jobs in skilled-services industries, such as healthcare, finance, and information technology. These new good jobs have steadily been replacing good jobs lost in traditional blue-collar industries.  To read the report on good jobs that pay without a BA, click here.

WOMEN'S WEALTH GAP YOUTUBE INTERVIEW
WITH ROBERT REICH AND ELENA CHAVEZ QUEZADA

Many people are familiar with the wage gap between men and women.  While this is serious, there is another gap that is often overlooked.  That is the gap in wealth accumulation between men and women.  This powerful video will educate you about this issue and help you look for policy and program changes that can help to address it.  Robert Reich is a former Secretary of Labor and currently a professor at the University of California.  Elena Chavez Quezada is a Program Officer for the Haas Foundation.  She also CoChairs the Bay Area Workforce Funders Collaborative and the Bay Area Asset Funders Network.  In addition, I am very proud to say she is one of my clients and has used my consulting services on many occasions.  To see the video, click here.

APPRENTICESHIPS
THE BENEFITS AND COSTS - A BUSINESS PERSPECTIVE

In 2014, President Obama set out an ambitious goal to double the number of apprenticeships to 750,000 by the end of 2018, and to diversify them as well. This year the half million mark was passed. However, despite their increasing popularity and proven benefit to workers, apprenticeships are not fully understood in the United States, especially from the point of view of U.S. employers. The biggest investment in apprenticeship programs, however, is made by businesses themselves. Yet surprisingly little is known about the payoff to businesses from these investments. This study is one of a very few to examine these returns to business.  Click here to access the study.

STORY TELLING IN CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Throughout history, cultures have embraced storytelling to help people understand their origins and how they belong. We all have stories about who we are and how we fit into the world, and we make choices in our lives according to our stories and how they fit with a particular situation and time. Our stories continue to shape our identity whether they are cultural folklore, religious myths, or personal experiences, and they have the power to influence our choices and shape our future.  Storytelling is a very effective tool in career counseling and coaching.
